kayakkrack Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I just bought a rapala jointed minnow, and I was wondering if you guys know any affective way to use it? Thanks! Carter Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted August 17, 2014 Super User Posted August 17, 2014 I'm usually reeling it slowly just below the surface and every so often I'll give it a quick jerk causing it to move erratically, great bait for finicky bass. I love throwing it right over the top of shallow grass! Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 One of the original swimbaits, a steady retrieve with pauses, changes in direction, and rod twitches work well. It can also be retrieved in the same manner as a jerkbait and is an awesome addition to an umbrella rig where legal. Quote
Mr. BattleArmor Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I'd suggest always trying to retrieve at different speed and cadences until the fish hit. I was using one on one day specifically I remember not getting hit even though there were multiple fish where I was casting to, I could see them. I threw it once and was a little off target, burned it back, and suddenly that speed of the bait made them all want it. You never know if speed or cadence could be the reason for bites or no bites. Super User WRB Posted August 17, 2014 Super User Posted August 17, 2014 What size broken back Rapala? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 17, 2014 Super User Posted August 17, 2014 One of the all-time great fishing lures for sure. You can use it like a top water. You can wake it just under the surface. You can retrieve it like a jerkbait. And it even works on a steady retrieve. Quote

Balshy Fishing Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I have one, but it's lighter I guess? anyway, it feels like i'm throwing just a hook it's that light lol Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 18, 2014 Super User Posted August 18, 2014 It's a great lure. The only one heavy enough to throw on casting gear is the #13. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 18, 2014 Super User Posted August 18, 2014 It's a great lure. The only one heavy enough to throw on casting gear is the #13. ???... I toss the #9 & #11 on casting tackle without problem. I'm not successful working them as one piece jerkbaits, but rather pull them several feet at a time letting them sit for several seconds between pulls. Steady retrieve will work, but not to the same degree as shorter intermittent pulls with the rod. Your mileage may vary... oe 1 Quote

bostonsox2904 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 On the river, cast it diagonally up stream and reel back in a J. It's against river fishing "rules", but I get a lot of great bites when the minnow is swimming up stream. Quote
