What rod you use for Lake Trout ...spinners, rapalas....

New to this looking for some advice my budget 100-200$.

Are you fishing for lakers right now, at this time of the year? If so, how deep are you looking? Lakers love deeper lake basins, especially those hovering around 90' or more. We've been especially successful this summer deep jigging lakers. We use a regular medium action spinning rod/reel, 10# test PP mainline with a 5' section of 8# test fluorocarbon leader. Lures we've had success with include 3/4 oz. blade baits and 1/2 - 3/4 oz jig heads with 5" fluke style plastics. It's a real hoot to nail a 5 lb. laker that deep on this light gear!

Not sure how big you are fishing but for small spinners I use a 6' L/MF Fenwick HMX with a Shimano Sedona 1000. Rod loads up well and I can cast a 1/16oz Panther Martin pretty far.

I'm fairly new to it as well but have been doing well with a ML Shimano Clarus spinning rod 6'6". Not so light that I struggle but enough to have fun and get a little skill going. I have been using in-line spinners with success and some ultralight rapalas in size 4-5. I tried a few kastmasters too. My friend caught a good sized fella with a rebel crickhopper! Going to fishing trip in September ( Northern Ontario)...Idk what will work better...jigs or spinner...totally new to trout fishing.

Again, it depends on how deep you are fishing and type of presentation, i.e.: trolling, downrigging, vertical jigging. September up there should still be warm, so I suspect the fish will be deep. If you try vertical jigging as I suggested, you might just tie into a few good ones. We did yesterday:

I'm using a BPS 7' medium action, one-piece, Bionic Blade rod that I bought maybe 10 years ago. It's matched with a 2500 series Shimano Symetre. And like I said, 10# test PowerPro braid with fluoro leader. Get a bunch of 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. blade baits and you're good to go! Good Luck!
