Robert Riley Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I just got back from a guided trip at Pickwick. Didn't catch much, but absolutely fell in love with the Dobyns DX745. I want one badly! I have a team discount and I still cant manage to spend that much on a rod. I'd like to buy a champion instead and I'm looking at getting a 704/5. I just don't know which to get. I want to say the 705 since I prefer a stiffer rod for my jigs. Im looking for a lighter jig rod, 1/4-3/8 jigs, that I can also through spinnerbaits in a pinch. Thanks Robert Quote
fishguy613 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 If your only throwing 1/4 and 3/8oz jigs ill recommend the dx744c, perfect rod for that. I own a 745c and it is one of my favorites, best 3/8 and 1/2oz jig rod in my opinion, guys use it for 3/4 footballs i hear. I had a 744 but felt it was underpowered with 1/2oz jigs so I swapped it for the 745 and am happy with the decision. I think the 744 is the rod for you. Quote

I have the 736, and a 703 Savvy. I would lean towards the 704 champion for the lighter jigs and spinnerbaiting. 705 like you said is stiffer. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 You will appreciate spending the extra money on the DX IMO, especially for bottom contact baits. But for the weights you mentioned and wanting to throw a spinnerbait in a pinch, your best option is going to be a 4 power rod. Also, the Champion series has more give in the tip than the DX, so a 5 power Champion will have a lighter tip than the DX745 you threw. Quote

I'd prefer not to empty my wallet for a DX, despite how awesome it was. The biggest issue for me is that the 704 seemed to have a much softer tip compared to the 745. Which bothers me when it comes to jigs Quote

It is a bit slower than the 745dx but I believe you would still be pleased with the performance. Quote

Which bothers me when it comes to jigs I dont have any experience with the 704/705 except for the CBs, only thing i can tell you is the 744 is perfect for 1/4-3/8oz jigs and will handle spinnerbaits too. The 704 i think can do the same but i think youll really dig the extra length of the 744, but that is your decision. I think either of these would suit your needs better than say the 735 as mentioned Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 I'd prefer not to empty my wallet for a DX, despite how awesome it was. Seems like you wont be satisfied considering how much you said you liked the DX in your original post, if you absolutely loved it you won't feel the same with a champion 1 Quote
Arv Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I would also encourage you to spend the extra on the DX. I think the DX744 is exactly what you're looking for. 1 Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I know you've already said a few times you don't want to spend the extra money on the DX. Unfortunately owning both lines including the specific models mentioned, I will also have to jump in as someone who believes you won't be satisfied by the champion. I don't want to sound as if it's not a nice rod, it is. It's just not close to the DX in my opinion and if that's the rod rod you fell in love with you should get the one you really want. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 The champ 704/705/734, assuming you are staying in the champ line, will have a "slower" tip than the DX series. I.E, if you think of the DX as XF, then the Champ is a Fast, if that makes sense. I will echo what others have said and recommend the DX744 for 1/4oz and 3/8oz jigs. I own 2x DX745's and use them for3/8-3/4 jigs and 5/16oz+ trigs or 1/4oz /w a heavier beaver trailer. It's a really special rod.I personally don't like the 744 and got rid of it. If I'm throwing a 1/4oz trig or a 1/4oz finesse jig, it's almost never in cover or at least heavy cover and I use the DX743. If you liked the 745, but want something "lighter" I'd get the Champ 734(Don't you dare let GirlyManGrantMan persuade you to get the 704. He fishes with a purse ) . It's not going to be as crisp as the DX745 but it still isn't a slouch. I use the 734 for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. I've even thrown weightless senkos with no issue on it. The 4 power is perfect for 1/4oz-3/8oz baits. I do not like anything 1/2oz on the 4 power rods though unless its a carolina rig. I will tell you, you will notice the rod being "slower" and if that bothers you, don't get it. It's by no means a Mod-Fast action but its slower than a DX though not by much. The 735 has a unique XF tip. It's "capable" of throwing a 1/4oz jig but I wouldn't have fun doing it. The 735 has a lot of power once it gets past the tip. 3/8oz-1/2oz jigs are right in its wheel house. Plus the 735 is my favorite frog rod. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 Go with the 705..... I mean the 735! Oh don't you kid yourself big girl! It hurt to write 735, didn't it? Quote
Grantman83 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 To be fair, my frog rod is the dx 746. Which one do you use again hmmmmmmm? Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 14, 2014 Super User Posted August 14, 2014 I'm a man and live and die by the 735 1 Quote
Crappiebasser Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Another vote for the DX. I have a 744, 745, and 784ML. The 784 is the best jig rod I've fished. Quote
Robert Riley Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 What about the DX702C? It's rated 1/8-1/2oz, just my target range. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 What about the DX702C? It's rated 1/8-1/2oz, just my target range. NOOO, if you liked the 745 then there's no way you will be happy with the 702. I think a 4 power rod will work the best for you. Quote
Robert Riley Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 So if you could pick two rods for all jigs, a 735 and a 745? Quote
fishguy613 Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 745, its a great stick ive got 50lb powerpro on it now but really like it with 20lb fluoro. 3/8oz and 1/2oz jigs Quote
Arv Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 So if you could pick two rods for all jigs, a 735 and a 745? If you were buying 2 rods. I wouldn't get both the 745 and 735. Imo it's redundant. I'd look at the 744/784 and the 745 in the dx line, depending on how and where you like to fish. If you're just asking if those are two good jig rods, then yes, absolutely. The 702c might be good for 1/8 oz jigs with small trailers and light wire hooks, but definitely not for bigger jigs that will get a bigger trailer. Quote

Yeah, that was a mistake on my part, I meant 702 and 745. Im actually going to give Dobyns a call this week and ask them. But it looks like im favoring the 745 right now. Another vote for the DX. Grantman83 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I use the mike long specifically for football jigs and c rigs. It's action isn't quite what I like for close pitching/flipping as I prefer the 745. That being said I can see some would like it for plastics because of extra length. Quote

Super User MarkH024 Posted August 18, 2014 Super User Posted August 18, 2014 I have the DX745 and it's a great stick. Super sensitive, well balanced paired with a Core 100 Mg7. I use it for 3/8-3/4oz jigs. I rarely throw jigs under 3/8 so it is the perfect stick for me. 1 Quote
