Super User K_Mac Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 I just read an article describing the fights that occurred during a joint practice. Some of the coaches seemed to think this was a good thing, that just increased intensity. I am only a casual fan, so for you football guys: Why would you risk injury during practice by going against another team? There were ~9000 spectators and a bunch of celebrities there, so maybe it's about money? Inquiring minds want know... Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 The thought process behind practicing with another team is just as you mentioned, to increase intensity. They want the players hitting earlier, the coaches don't want the players hitting teammates, because it's natural for a player to "pull-up"/let up prior to contact with another teammate. Quote

I never found pulling or letting up against my teammates natural. You play like you practice. Our quarterbacks and running backs, hated our offensive line, anytime I got through. The ONLY thing I didn't do against them was ear hole or head hunt them. Only that was reserved for the game. We only practiced twice a week in full pads anyway. Later in the season we only practiced once a week in full pads. 1 Quote

I agree, I used to go hard in practice when I played hockey, but I guess this is where the money element comes into play. 1 Quote
tipptruck1 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 Like Raider and Jig. I never went 50% in practice. I don't think any one did. Well other then the QB. We only had one QB we could not touch. His dad and his employer. Were the biggest booster club supporters. So know you know why we could not touch him. He was a good guy and every thing. Just needed to be knocked down a peg or two. Every once and a while. 1 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted August 13, 2014 Author Super User Posted August 13, 2014 I understand that practice needs to simulate game conditions when it comes to speed and contact. Doing that with teammates is one thing; doing it with another team is another. They are already playing preseason games that give opportunity to show off their skills and draw a little blood. I'm just surprised that isn't enough. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 There are a boatload of players trying to make it to the NFL, let alone the team they're wearing the jersey for, so I'm sure they're show casing their talent for the coaches on both teams. Remember, no guarantees in football. These kids are going all out. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 What talent? Two teams fighting it out in the basement for next year's draft pick? Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted August 13, 2014 Author Super User Posted August 13, 2014 RW I don't know whether you are right or not. Truth is I don't much care. I was just unaware that teams practiced together leading up to the regular season. I suppose it does give those trying to make a squad a chance to impress. The dangers of getting someone hurt seem high though. That is something that most teams don't seem to care all that much about unless it a marquee player for the reason Jigfishn gave; there are plenty of others to take the spot of an injured prospect. Super User Jrob78 Posted August 13, 2014 Super User Posted August 13, 2014 They do this every year and have for many years. I'm sure Jerry Jones and Al Davis were buddies. Quote

tipptruck1 Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 We all know what this is. This was a sales pitch for the state of Texas. They might look like they are practicing. In reality the Cowboys are trying to urge them to move to Texas. Quote

Why would the Cowboy's want more competition for the TX dollar anyway? Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 14, 2014 Super User Posted August 14, 2014 Teams get tired of playing against the same guys all the time so the two teams will scrimmage against each other to see how they play against a real foe. You can't slack or make your friend look good if you are playing against other guys trying to make their team. Quote

They might go 2-14 and I'm seriously being generous. I can see them putting up a fight week 8 vs CLE and MAYBE week 4 vs MIA. Might upset San Diego one of the two again but I doubt it. Oakland has a RIDICULOUSLY hard schedule this year it's almost not funny. My Wifes a Raiders fan. No idea why. Jets Texas Patriots Dolphins Bye Chargers Arizona Browns Seahawks Broncos Chargers Chiefs Rams 49s Chiefs Bills Broncos Quote

Sorry couldn't resist. Seriously though, they have a very tough schedule. If they are going to turn things around, the NFL sure didn't do them any favors and if I read there roster correctly, they also have 23 rookies. Quote

Got to rebuild. They can't keep going as they have been. I'm fine with 23 rookies. Dynasty's weren't built in a couple years. Gotta start from scratch. Also playing garbage teams game after game does not make a team better. You don't get to the top by beating mediocre teams. Also. Yes we did lose to BYE last year. That's one of the hardest teams to beat. Quote

Don't worry Raider, I hear they're having a Ken Stabler and Steve Casper memorial game where they play a few downs in the first half...Tix sales have been down you know. 1 Quote
