As I'm sure you have read in many posts probably the best all around casting rod would be a 7'MH. That is unless you are talking about a spinning rod which then I would try to find something in the 7'M action.  As for brand, well you have a lot of choices, *** has pretty good sticks (both black and green omens) in your range, Falcon, many of the ABU's, quite a few Shimano's, Duckett's, Daiwa, etc.  Have to find the handle length and trigger set up that you like best. But you have lot's of options.

Brand, choose whatever you like. Action, Fast. Power, MH. Length, 6 Ft +

I agree with a MH fast action rod being very versatile, there are sooo many good rods in that price range that you will get tons of suggestions, you will have to do a some research on your own and find out which one you want.... we can point you in the right direction though!

I really like the Duckett White Ice rods!

Best all around rod type? 7 foot. MH power. Fast action.

Brandwise, you really can't go wrong in that price range. Fenwick HMG, St. Croix Premier or Avid, Shimano Crucial, Diawa Tatula.

If you are throwing 1/4 ounce you need a medium rod. A medium heavy is too powerful. You will need to find one with fast action though which can be tricky as most medium powers have moderate action for crankbaits.

Weightless up to 1/2 oz, I use a 6' 10" MH xtra fast but a 7' wouldn't hurt a thing!

Your requirements are in the heart of the rod industry.

The problem is a Medium and Medium-Heavy can vary quite a bit from brand to brand, so don't pin yourself down that way. I use to use Falcon rods. The Medium-Heavy 'Weightless Worm' (6'7", XF) or 'Finesse Jig' (6'10", F) Lowriders are rods that are very versatile and cover your needs pretty well. I use St. Croix rods now. A Medium-Heavy St. Croix is a whole different animal than a Falcon. I would recommend a Medium action St. Croix for your needs. Although some wouldn't recommend anything below the 'Avid' line (my current rod of choice), which starts to push your budget, the 'St. Croix Rage' in 6'10", M, XF, or 7'1", M, F, might be worth a look.

I agree with Emerson.  Some companies under rate their rods.  Abu is another one.  I would definitely opt for a MF when going with one of these companies.  I like MHF rods, but a MF might suit you better if total weight isn't going to be over 3/8 oz.  That will put you near the middle of the rod's rating....almost always better than being at one end or the other.  You didn't mention the kind of cover you fish in.  That will also help determine which power rod is better for you.

If you go with a MHF, then I can tell you I love my Rainshadow RX7 IMB843 rated for 1/4-3/4 and 10-17 lb.  Don't know what one would cost new as I got a super deal on a like new one off the classifieds.  This rod handles 3/8 oz. like a champ and is quite sensitive.  Also I would look at the Aetos.  I have bought a few Fenwicks (Aetos and Smallmouth) over the past couple years and am very impressed with them.

As already stated, there are plenty of fine rods in the $160-$200 range.  Good luck narrowing your choice down to one.  :teeth:

My bass fishing is done from the bank as well, I use a 6'6 ml spinning for ponds and 7' med spinning for high banked canals.  I have gone to a mh when I'm targeting snakeheads, they are generally in fairly heavy vegetated areas.
