cjam93 Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Hey guys so I was wondering if yall thought it would be ok to throw a shakeyhead on a 6'6 medium Carbonlite? I prefer them to a spinning setup but will go to a spinning if need be. thanks! Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 10, 2014 Super User Posted August 10, 2014 Unless your shakeyhead jighead doesn't weight about an ounce you can cast practically any weight with that rod. 1 Quote
cjam93 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Thanks for the reply guys. I should have worded my post better, I was in a bit of a hurry when I wrote it, sorry about that. What I am actually concerned with is if the rod has enough backbone to set the hook? I have not fished shakeyheads much, and the only worm fishing I have done has been with a 7'1 mh xf Tatula, so the medium feels really flimsy to me compared to what I am used to. I figured I would rather ask on here about it before I go out and possibly miss a fish because it cant drive the hook home. Also have it spooled with 10lb pline fluoroclear but have been wanting to go to braid. Quote
Nick49 Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Should be fine. I fish shakey head jigs with 5" stick worms often, using baitcasters, fleurocarbon line and 6'6" to 7' M or MH rods most of the time. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 11, 2014 Super User Posted August 11, 2014 As long as your hooks are sharp you'll have no problem setting the hook. 1 Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Yes of course it will be able to set the hook on a shakey head. Shakey heads typically have thinner diameter wire hooks, so less effort will be needed. Too much backbone will straighten out these hooks on a solid hookset, so the 7'1 tatula will be too much for most shakey heads. If you feel like you can't set the hook on some hookset a with the rod, reel more before you set the hook so so you get as much line pickup as possible so that your hookset pulls directly on the hook, and not on any slack line. Good luck. Quote
thehooligan Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Thats a great rod for shakeyheads, i use 6'5-6'8 medium casting rods and they work very well for shakeyheads, dropshot, and other finesse fishing. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted August 11, 2014 Super User Posted August 11, 2014 If your really worried about a strong hooket throw on some braid and see if you like it, that's what I use with shakey heads and love it Quote
