BucketmouthAngler13 Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 i can make topwater spook/plug like things.... it isn't that hard. other than that there is Wire baits, which is much different than carving. Quote

bassmasster Posted September 15, 2006 Author Posted September 15, 2006 BucketmouthAngler13 can u please tell me how to make it Quote
Daren Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 I'll tell you how to make them, it's pretty easy to make top water prop baits and chuggers too. The easiest way is with a mini lathe ($100 on ebay gets a decent one with the tools) and just start playing around. I know that doesn't sound like the full explaination, but the first day you can make lures like this I bet. Pick up a couple of your favorite lures and with some scrap wood try to copy them, it's easier than you might think. The chuggers you just need a little drum sander to do the mouth. Quote
Daren Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 but the first day you can make lures like this I bet. . Well sorta like those, you need wood like this to start Anyone know what it is ? Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 BucketmouthAngler13 can u please tell me how to make it Well i havn't made many, but here is one my friend bassholebuster14 made: He just took a maple (i think) stick and got the bark of with a knife, then he used a beltsander to make all the egdes smooth and the front round. i think he used a dremmel for the indent on the lower side of it, and he use a dremmel for some of the touch up work too. Then he sanded the extra smooth with sandpaper and started painting. Quote
Daren Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 This is what that chunk looked like inside after a little lathe work, sanding and 4 coats of marine varnish... beautiful if I do say so myself : Quote
justtrying Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 beautiful if I do say so myself : yessir, they absolutely are! Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 but the first day you can make lures like this I bet. . Well sorta like those, you need wood like this to start Anyone know what it is ? Curly version of hardwoods. Maple, elm, cherry, walnut... Which one is that? The picture of the raw wood. How are "curly" versions formed, or are they thier own genus? OT-I have a black walnut tree on our property. Was told they were worth good money in the old days for rifle stocks. True? Quote
Daren Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Black walnut is still prized for rifle stocks, carving and turning. Not all the "yard trees" are good ones, but every once in awhile we get lucky. We have alot of walnut here in central Illinois, I get some beauties 36"+ across. The picture below is 1/2 of the free walnut logs delivered from a bridge job my buddy was doing. I was swimming in walnut that day for sure, 2 semi loads 8-) The picture of the raw chunk in my post is sugar (hard, rock) maple. Good question about how "curly" is formed... nobody knows why it is just a genetic anomoly (some say defect, that is in the eye of the beholder.) Some species are more prone to it, the curly figure. Maples for example may be 1 in 3,000,000 and that is the most common species to have figure. Any species CAN be curly, the odds just are less for most. Quote
boatnik13 Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 bassmaster ! I can make any replica thats a min. of 3" in lenth. Show me a picture and I can produce it out of white pine , red oak or maple. Simple! Start experimenting with trashed broom sticks and then advance to wood dowel. I also use a mimi lathe . lures are in two shapes > "ROUND" (cylinder) or "FLAT". I use white pine slats for flat lures. Balance of the lure is the most time comsumming. It takes alot of time to make a custom solid wood lure . Zarra spook is the easyest to copy. I have a nack for making them but others struggle. Most of my lures are for toothy fish > musky, pike, bluefish. Quote
NortheastBrookie Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum here. I searched out how to make homemade wooden lures on Google and ended up here. Great looking lures! I was wondering if you could recomend any tools to go with the lather. I have about 3 broomstick.shovel handles for practicing, I just need to buy a lathe and basic tools, but not sure where to begin. The idea of marine varnish is a great idea. I was hoping ot make one of the lures in the picture my grandfather and his grandfather made. Of course I have drawings of some ideas too! Nice to meet everyone, thanks for sharing your information online. Quote
