Is anyone taking advantage of the super moon and going night fishing ? I will be. The bite should be good !

For me, unless the moon (especially a full one) is obscured by clouds, the bite is routinely slow.

I do best on totally dark nights, although the fishing is dramatically easier when one can see in full moon light.

If I do go, I'll be fishing in the same place / spots that I would on a sunny day because the fish seem to position themselves in the same manner.

Good Luck tonight

That is very interesting A-Jay. I seem to have my best luck around a full moon. When night fishing I am targeting the thickest nastiest weed beds using spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits. I am usually fish until about midnight. The fish are bigger on average then what I had been catching during the day in the same locations. What kind of cover/structure do you like to target  when night fishing and with what lures ?

It's doing some crazy stuff to the tides! I'm in Myrtle Beach right now and there is water all over the place at high tide. fishing is still good though.

My waters are routinely clear which does make the night bite better for a larger average fish.

The stuff I'm targeting is pretty much the same type of ambush points I'd fish during the day but with the cover of darkness the clearer water isn't quite as much a factor as during the day.  Fish seem to come (and stay) shallower making them 1) easier to find & 2) a little easier to fool (catch)

With a big fat full moon - in the clear water it's almost like day time - the fish are spooky.

Same here. Full moon equals a tough night bite for me in clear or dirty water. I'd still go if it was an option, but I'll be at work all night  :dazed-7:

Well I'm sitting here writing this by the light of the moon, at the ramp waiting for my boater for a tounament on Okeechobee.

I'm told they had 7" of rain here the last 2 days and the water is up 2' since Friday.

They should be pulling water but it's flat calm here.

Oh well, the hunt is on!

Fished yesterday from 4 until about 1045 pm. I caught 24 bass on jigs and rubber worms up until dark. Nothing good at all, a few around 2 1/4 lbs but most were under 2 lbs. After dark which was about 845-9pm, I caught 13 bass. After dark the fish averaged 2 1/4 lbs. They were destroying my buzzbait. Nothing huge. The biggest of the night was 3 lbs 5 oz.

It rained, but that comes as no surprise, it rains almost daily down here during this time of the year.

What lures and what type of cover/structure is everyone fishing at night ?

Mike L, you must be fishing the Budget tourney? I fished the Gerrard's yesterday, and boy was it tough. First was around 23.5lbs, second 21.7, and third was 20.9. What where the weights for your tournament?

Did pretty welk today...my buddy and i put a good number of fish in the boat from 8-12. ( probably 15-17) mostly in the 2lb range with a few near three. Suprisingly it was slow from 530-730...then again it was 47f out lol.

Once the sun came out he fish got hungry!

We did really well today. Put in around 8am and got one flipping reeds at <3# . Then we went out on the ledges and I caught an 8.46# on a crank and partner caught one just at 8 and another at 5 on the same crank.

I finished off with two on a t-rigged worm at about 2.5#

Storm made us stop fishing at about 130pm so 25+# in 6 hours is pretty good for summer!

Ill try to load a pic of my toad. It didn't make it. .... :( but I did have it certified at the ramp.

Bright moon

Clear skies

Clear water

Create shadows

Which creates an ambush point!

Just saying ;)

i'm done with full moons and moving on to new moons. full moon night ops have given me virtually the same results as day time fishing.  i've talked with several anglers who've had much better luck with new moons b/c of the low light conditions. it's not surprising bass still hold tight to cover and tucked in shadows giving the light a full moon gives off.  the whole point of me going out at night is to gain an edge and easily catch roaming fish with a 20 ft strike zone. i can go after the tight to cover/ 2 ft strike zone bass any day of the week.

 Smooth move ~

Seems that on those dark nights there is less need to fish any where near as close to the cover as on light up nights.  Fish tend to hang "around" or relate loosely to the structure / cover - rather than being tucked way up in it.  Often times places like, the open area between docks, both sides of and the tip of a point, all around a shallow water hump, open areas between the lily pads, can be stacked with fish . . . .

Still challenging, especially since you'll have Very Limited vision and depth perception - but the rewards are pretty decent.

I'd always understood that New Moon was better than Full.  Experience (mostly with other than LMB, however) proved that no moon phase could override effects of weather.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is more difference in tidal waters, however.

I've had no fish fishing tidal water and 1 fish in freshwater over the last 2 days.

The gravitational pull of the sun and moon is three times greater on the new moon than the full moon.

I started night fishing the new moon only in 1974 & continued for the next 8 yrs.

I started fishing night tournaments on full moons only, this time for 12 yrs.

For the next 22 yrs I fished at night under any moon phase.

Three days prior and three days after the full moon one will find similarities to day fishing clear high skies. Bass tight to both structure and cover.

To many anglers this scenaro easier to fish, believing the light from the full moon illuminates the bait against the surface for more contrast.

Shallow verses deep: I have not noticed a distinct advantage one way or the other. I wilk normally fish both areas throughly staying with the one that produces the best results. However shallow does offer a greater opportunity to use different lures.

Absolutely true with no doubt what so ever.  I fish tide every day, lower low tide and higher tide with much stronger current on both new and full moon.  November is the month where it gets even more exaggerated.

Some of the best fish I've caught have been during conditions that were anything but conducive to catch fish, yet that one monster rogue just happened to be swimming around.  I caught a permit in heavy incoming tide current on a bucktail jig, total opposite to their normal habitat and diet, so you just never know.  We catch fish on spoons in the middle of the night with no moon, contrary to conventional wisdom of needing light reflection of a spoon.

I say the hell with the moon and just go fishing, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Had a club tourny this past weekend and it was SLOW for all.  Lake usually brings in a few bags over 15lbs and a few 4-5lb bass.  This tourny was won with 5 bass for 7.85lbs I got third with 3 bass for 5.89lbs.  I almost left after weighing in because I was embarassed with the catch.  Ended up leaving with $200.  Big bass was only 2.50lbs.  I feel that I should have moved shallow with the moon but never did it.  I like a no moon night better.
