Squirmin Wormin Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 magnificent mono is what's in hand i think, even though there is new stuff that is also there as well ,flourocarbons, spiderwire, and the rest of the lines, but i've always used monofilament since fishing and never tried the new,and don't think i will .The mono i have does what the new lines likewise ,now those who use the newer lines don't take it wrong ,newer is your liking and work's for you that is fine . But getting to the point, monofilament is as good as gets, and never had a problem with .what's your thoughts bout monofilament ? 2 Quote

I've tried braid and fluoro, I didn't like either one. Everyone nowadays swears by braid and I just don't like it Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 90% of the time I fish with NYLON, Trilene Big Game in several diameters, have been doing it for more than 3 and a half decades. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Bit like saying " I've got an F-150 and stick with it. I've tried a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce and don't like them." Sometimes an F-150 is the perfect vehicle, and it will get the job done in most situations perfectly well, but in the right place a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce are much better choices. 4 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 Use light braid on spin reels now and will probably never look back. Do use a fluro leader. But love the fact I can go months and months without having to put line on the reel and the line twist is a minimum at most. Just sayin 3 Quote

Just sayin +1 ...Braid on a spinning reel with a fluro leader has it's place (jigs / worms) as does straight fluoro for drop shotting and shaky head ...Mono good for everything else - especially top water or any lure with treble hooks. Super User F14A-B Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 I use Yo, and Pline CX,CXX.. . But, I have used braid, FC,at times, I would say, maybe try it and just see firsthand. Then you can argue you have used it and don't care for it much like me, if that's the case for you. Quote

Squirmy not a thing wrong with the Ford and if that is what you like then go for it. Don't try to convince me that it is "as good as it gets" though, unless you just want something to argue about. I'm good with that... 1 Quote

I like mono for treble hooks, but there are better options for some techniques. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 I do like mono too but few tools are good for every situation. Braid on a spinning reel is a very good thing. Braid in the slop with frogs & jigs is also a good thing. Mono does almost everything else for me. A-Jay Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 85% carry monofilament line. I admit to being frugal, but also to liking mono as that is the only line I ever used until about 4 years ago. Just because it is old technology doesn't mean it still doesn't have its uses. Obviously I still prefer it to other types of line. Like A-Jay one place I love braid is throwing into lily pads and other junk. I've got it on a couple spinning reels, but since I seldom use spinning reels the jury is still out. I do like the idea of minimum line twist, and small line diameters on spinning reels, tho. BTW, a friend and I were able to catch a serious number of rock bass one time on a trip up north 30 some years ago fishing a jig off the bottom with mono. My friend and I had a fantastic fishing day hauling them in one after another with light line on spinning reels and light rods. Too bad that was the only trip we made there. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 I use mono and fluoro. They both have their place and both have their benefits. When it comes to abrasion resistance and sensitivity, it's not even close between the two. I'll always use fluoro over mono when that's needed. Quote

papajoe222 Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 I like putting as many odds in my favor when I'm out chasing the big girls and the more I can up the percentages, the more confident I am. Mono was all I ever used because that's what was available. I had to go with 20lb. mono when I first started fishing plastic worms deep to eliminate some of the stretch seeing as I was using a 5'6" broomstick of a rod. A lot of changes have been introduced into this sport over the years and I imagine there are more to come. Improvements in things like line, lighter and more sensitive rods, lighter and more user friendly reels, not to mention advances in electronics. All of these and more have made my quest both easier and more enjoyable, which is my goal. Mono has a solid foothold as a tool for me, but when the need for a box-end wrench arrises I'll use it if I have it rather than an open end. If I don't have it, you can be sure I'll go out and get it before I tackle a similar job. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Like many have said, nothing is 100% and that goes for mono braid fluoro you name it. I personally start with braid but use leaders as long as 12' for whatever I need to do on the business end, Fluoro or Mono. When I had a 36' 5th wheel and a 26 to 28' hardtop to drag around my 1 ton w/diesel was hard to beat, but didn't make much sense as a grocery getter, 10 minuet trips a few times a day. You need to check out your other choices, unless you only fish one lure one way, then Mono very well could be your best option,,,,,, Quote

It really depends on how obsessed you are! Personally, I have VERY specific favorites. ALL of my treble hooks are fished with Sunline Super Natural. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted August 9, 2014 Super User Posted August 9, 2014 What brand of fluoro do you use/recommend?The two best I've used are Tatsu and Shooter. I like Sniper as well. Never cared for much else. Quote
