I was fishing at lunch today and saw some minnows being chased to the surface. There were a few large splashes, but I never got a good look at the predator. I tossed a soft plastic, got a bite, and tried to set the hook. The line flew back towards me with a clean slice through my brush hog. It made me wonder if snapping turtles could be responsible for this. Do snapping turtles chase bait fish??

No, but there might have been a turtle under the baitfish.

He can't catch them, but he can scare them!

Every time I hook a snapper, they bend my hook. They have strong jaw. It could be a bowfin. That has happened to me couple times

Wow, same thing happpened to me just yesterday. I cast my worm into the splash and got a bite, but it felt like a ton of bricks on the line, then it snapped. There are snapping turtles the size or garbage pail lids there also.

Happened to me to the other day I casted my trigged worm out and started reeling it in and got stuck I was like dang gotta break it. So I tighten the drag and get ready to break the line. Then it started moving I was like oh god big fish big fish lol so I start reeling it in and pop goes my line. I was blown then like a minute later I see a trash can lid size turtle with my worm hanging out its mouth. Made me feel better I didn't loose a good fish.

Nothing funnier than pulling on your line to snap it and it starts moving after a bunch of wrist flicks and pops to try to get it free cause ya thought it was a snag hahaha

This happened to me too but I didn't see the fish. Maybe it was a turtle. I was using a Ragetail Toad though and let it sink. I figured it was a northern or musky.

So it can happen.

It might have been a gar. I've had them chop swimbaits (of the Skinny Dipper variety) in half.

I've never had a snapping turtle chase an artificial lure. However a couple of months ago I was fishing a shallow area with a swim jig when I saw a huge wake behind the lure. There was a sudden strike and the battle was on. It was obvious that it was something of large size by the way it fought. Much to my dismay when I got it near shore it turned out to be about a 15 pound soft shelled turtle (instead of a bass). Luckily the hook opened up enough for it to escape as I attempted to slide it up the bank. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with it once I landed it!

What you really need to do is find when the great blue herons key in on spooks. WAAAAAY worse than a turtle!
