I'm looking for a rod to throw #4-#7 shad raps and similar crankbaits on in it winter.  Currently, I use a 6'8 m xf crucial dropshot rod and it does ok but I want something longer.  I missed out on an older 7'4 M crucial spinning crankbait rod and I don't believe they make them anymore.  I don't want to spend a lot of money on this rod since it will only see use a limited amount of time.  Any suggestions?

I've never used a Fenwick before, had a m/f premier at one time that literally exploded on a hookset.  Not saying I wouldn't consider another though, I still have a premier casting rod that's close to 10 years old now and still use it every trip.  thanks for the suggestions.

I use a 7' rod... Brand doesn't matter, you can't get my awesome rod anyway... But I agree with a ML rod for that work too.

Try the 7' M Browning Silaflex.

You could get a custom built on a baitcasting glass blank.

Nice idea but I think it would be more than I want to spend for a rod that wont see a lot of action 8 months of the year.

I've been thinking I'll save a little more money and wait until the Labor day sales start and get a better rod.  Been thinking a dobyns champion 702 would be a good choice.  I will use it to throw the shad raps but also throw small hair jigs on, as well as do some trout fishing with it too.  I found a Stradic FJ1000 on clearance thinking about picking it up also but not sure how well it will balance?  Anyone opinions on that combo?  Does the FJ1000 come with a spare spool?

Can't say anything about the longer rod, but no, the FJ do not come with spare spools. Believe that ended with the FI models (I have 2 Stradic 1000 FIs with spare spools -- fantastic reels).

FWIW, the 1000 FI balances fantastic with a BPS carbonlite 6'6" MF... that's the longest I've used them with. They balance well with everything I've used so far. Believe I had one mounted on a 6'8" carbonlite in a BPS when I was testing them out - this was several years back. Light as a feather combo.

I can get you a custom built for well under the price of a Champion. Shoot me a pm if you are interested.

Well that sucks the stradic doesn't come with a spare spool anymore.  thanks for the offer but I'm not interested in a custom rod.

I checked out the Academy here on Saturday they didn't have anything I was interested in.  Honestly, I'm getting tired of going there they never have anything I want anymore.

You can order the spools from Shimano.

Personally I would be matching the rod more to the environment and less to the lure type.  Fishing weeds I use a med spinning and open water it's a ml, I use what ever lures I wish on either rod.

the main purpose is to find a longer rod that will throw the light baits farther.  Most of the lakes I would be fishing with this combo are void of weeds or deep clear highland reservoirs where long casts and small baits are necessary.

Some of the farthest casting (spinning) rods I can think of are fast taper rods, designed to cast light weights.  Sizes from 6'6 to 8', and ul to heavy both full and split grip.  If interested I'll send the link, you may not be familiar with this brand, but many people use them down here for bass and peacock as well as inshore species.  I have 3 myself.

9' 2-piece ML 1/16-3/8 oz. $99.99  http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Johnny-Morris-CarbonLite-CL-Series-Spinning-Rods/product/10205013/

Fenwick has a 7'6" Light in the River Runner series. 1/16-5/16 oz. 2-piece $129.95

I currently use an older Carbonlite 7' ML as one of my rods for throwing #5 Shad Raps.

Look around for G. Loomis GL2 PR845 S spinning popping rod. I use the PR845 C casting version of this rod for small crank baits, it's perfect blank for this application.

Tom

PS, it doubles for a good structure spoon rod.

Kev-

If I may, I rarely actually use my spare spools... This is how I roll, I use braid for the mainline which solves most every line management issue I've had with monos, copolys, etc., as mainlines.

I tie on a leader for every application. So with my braid of 10 lb test (use 15 or 20 if it suits you better), tie on anything from pure fluoro to a copoly or mono line for whatever crank, softie, jig, etc., you want to use.

Typically I carry a plano spool "box" with 6 spools of various lines in various pound tests.

In my book, this system solves a lot of issues. But again, it is how I roll, we all have different tastes, likes and dislikes.

Just FWIW.

I've thought about using braid with a leader also.  I'm usually not a fan of that but it is an option.

Back in olden times, when the Lindners still owned In-fisherman, they had a couple of articles about throwing cranks on spinning gear.  The articles were written by Tom Seward, the guy who designed Timber Tigers.  They made a lot of sense at the time.  (These were written prior to braid becoming readily available)

Anyway, off and on through the years, I have experimented on using spinning gear for cranks - mixed results.  For the most part, I like the extra distance I can get with spinning gear.  I can get similar distance with bait casting gear, but I have to pay attention to proper technique and not cast into the wind and stuff like that.  This stuff seems to go in cycles with me.

Currently, I am back to using spinning gear.   I'm using a 6'9" MH Kistler spinning rod (the blue one).  It has a surprisingly limber tip for a rod labeled MH.  I've experimented using different reels and for the moment I have settled on using an old Diawa 2600.  It is a large older reel with a fairly large spool.  I'm currently using 14 lb Fireline and a medium length (3'to 4') fluorocarbon leader.  Generally 20 lb test on the leader.

It works ok, and like I mentioned earlier I love the distance I'm getting with out the effort that making similar distance casts on bait casting gear involves.

A 7' ML Fenwick HMG is pretty affordable.  You might want to look at Salmon rods with power ratings that match the baits you intend to throw too.
