Braden Vineyard Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I have been fishing this local pond and I. The spring when bass were spawning I could catch them on beds! But now in the summer I still see the bass swimming but they won't bite anything! I've tried everything even jj's magic! They react to it just won't take it! So I was wondering if I could have some edvice on What you guys think I should do or What y'all would do in this situation? Quote
scoober Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Braden sounds like you have some fussy, spooky fish. Remember that if you can see the bass, they can likely see you, so stay back and make longer casts with more subtle presentations. I like light braid for this stuff;10# on a spinning rod and very light weights (1/8-1/16 th oz) and baits like a Smallie Beaver or tube rigged Texas style, or a small worm rigged wacky. For jigs try throwing a 1/16th or 1/8th oz Bitsy Bug with a small trailer. The braid will help you set a hook at distance, and allow you to fight a fish successfully around heavy vegetation. The light weight will provide a slow fall and give the bass a longer look at the bait. Move slow and soak baits. Keep in mind that there is a lot of food in the water come summertime and bass will have feeding activity periods that are frequent but brief, so mostly you are fishing to bass that may not be all that hungry. A subtle bait and presentations will help you get more bites. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted August 6, 2014 Super User Posted August 6, 2014 Does the pond have lots of grass/weeds? Do you see them staking out bluegill beds and focusing their attention there? Spooky fish are hard in a pond but not impossible. If their's heavy grass, ignore the fish you see and pitch punch baits into the thicker stuff and the holes inbetween. If it's pretty clear and open, option 2 and 3, dropshot rig, and finally a Fat Ika. Quote
kikstand454 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 When I bank fished, I would walk around crystal clear springs and sinkholes. I learned quickly that if I saw a fish, I probably wasn't going to catch that fish. But I realized that by seeing the fish and what it was doing and where, I was developing a pattern without actually having to put the time in. So I would see that bass were cruising the shallows moving down the bank, so I would cast far far ahead of me down the bank. If I noticed they were clinging to cover, stumps/laydowns, then as I moved down the bank, I would try to spot the cover as far off as I could and cast to it- KNOWING they were there. The fish I stumbled upon would rarely ever bite, but I would try and process as much info about that sighting as I could. 1 Quote
einscodek Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 When I see bass cruising around sunfish like buddie buddies I know its time to look elsewhere..esp summer afternoons.. I'm gonna spook that fish rather than catch it. Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Yep, if I can see the fish, I cannot catch her. Cast to deeper water. Quote
Braden Vineyard Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 Yes there's lots of bluegill! And I figured they just wearnt hungry! But yesterday they just keep on and keep on reacting to this crank bait! Like I could throw it in front of me were I couldn't see Gish and when I got it back to me there a least two to three bass following it! But all day they just won't take it! They like baby brush hogs but they don't react to that eathier ! Quote

OroBass Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 When you have followers but no takers try using the same lure in a different color. You can also try changing your retrieve. 2 Quote
Squirmin Wormin Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 you might try a lizard ,to a bass that is a natural target for them Quote
