bankguy315 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 What size hook do you guys typically use for your dropshot rigs: #1, #2, 1/0 or 2/0? I just picked up a pack of 1/0 gamagatzu dropshot/splitshot hooks, ive never used them before are they good hooks and will this size be sufficient? Quote
Logan S Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 #2 Owner Mosquito's are what I've used for years... This is for the nose-hooking style. Edited to add: Those 1/0 gammy's will work for you, might be a little big if they are the nose-hook style...But it will hook em just fine. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 Nose hooking: #2 VMC spinshot Weedless: 2/0 or 3/0 VMC wide gap spinshot depending on bait size. Quote
MikeinFresno Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I use 1/0 EWG with thin wire or the Owner 1/0 drop shot hooks. The fine wire helps get it thru the lip on those subtle bite days. The Owners are VERY sharp. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 Owner mosquito #1's. Having had a reason to stop using them. Good, quality made hooks. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 No rules, hook size and hooking style depend upon many conditions, for fishing my everday lake it would be idiotic to dropshot with an exposed hook, for my everyday lake I use a 1/0 - 5/0 EWG weedless rigged bait, for other lakes I can fish with an exposed hook, in that case normally I fish with a 3/0 Owner Mutu Light hook. ( 3/0 in that hook is not as big as a regular 3/0 hook, on the contrary i´st quite small ). Quote
bankguy315 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 Thank you for the replies. I had been using the eagle claw hooks that come in the ds kits from wally world but I could never get a good hookset with them. most of the time the fish came unbuttoned half way in and the bait was all twisted and caught on the point. fishguy613 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 owner mosquitos, size 1 or 1/0 just picked up a bag of 40 for $12! Quote
Slade House Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I picked up a pack of the new mustad kvd double wide drop shot hooks at icast and they blow every hook out of the water. The shape and design are perfect in my boom Quote
FrogFreak Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I find this one hard to answer because it depends on so many things. I like the VMC spinshot hooks in 1 or 2 size for my lakes. I find that a #1 hook from one company is a diferent size than a #1 hook from another company so I like to see them in the store before I buy them the first time. VMC, Gammy Trokar, Owner and Mustad are all good hook companies in my humble opinion. Quote
michang5 Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I alternate between Gamakatsu 1/0 drop shot/split shot hooks and Mustad #1 drop shot/live bait hooks. I nose hook trick worms, finesse worms, tiny flukes and shad-shaped worms. I also will wacky hook the worms. Both work great and are inexpensive (which is critical since I snag a lot throwing the DS from the bank). If I know the BOW I'm fishing has fish over 3#, I will use the 1/0. Otherwise, I use the #1. Just a confidence thing. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 7, 2014 Super User Posted August 7, 2014 Size 1 or 2 octopus style hook or.... 1/0 or 2/0 rigged Texas style or.... Whatever you want!!! Quote
Balshy Fishing Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Do you guys all do palomar knots when you tie on a dropshot or what? Quote
Smokinal Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 ^^^Yes, and be sure to pass the tag end through the hook eye, from the top, after palomar is tied. This makes the hook stand out away from the line, improving bait action. Quote

Regarding hooks I prefer the Gamakatsu. That said you may also look at your rod/ reel / line combo and hooksetting technique. I prefer braid with a floro leader, when I went to that combo my hooksetting and landing % went way up . Quote

I have a shimano sedona 1000 sereis spoooled with 6lb fluro on a BPS MF action IM7 rod, and i reel down on the fish and pull into them keeping constant pressure. when i was using the VMC hooks i got from MTB i didn't have a problem with the bait balling up. i think its the bend in the cheap hooks thats the problem Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted August 8, 2014 Super User Posted August 8, 2014 VMC Spinshot #1 - nose hooking 2/0 - 4/0 EWG - Texas Rigged ... depends on the bait. Quote
FrogFreak Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Since I use the VMC spinshot with Fluoro, I use the San Diego Jam Knot.that Martens recommends. http://www.another site/tips_article.asp?ID=67#.U-VDE_ldWHM Quote
