Hey all, DVT is going to be making me a rod. Spinning exclusively for shaky heads and weightless t rigged senkos. Theres 2 guide chains that are up for grabs on this piece.

1) Microwave - Never used them and never even heard of them until DVT made the referral. I guess the weird stripper guide helps by allowing you to use smaller guides up top to reduce weight. Seems cool but..

2) Fuji SIC - I have this set on my previous gen Cumara and love em! They simply work. Never have wind knots, twist, or any issues casting. So...

Should I stick with what I know or are the microwaves worth a shot. Its not like I'm buying a $100 pre fab rod. This is gonna cost me more than I'm used to spending on a single rod and don't want to be kicking myself in the arse first day on the water with it.

I will also say Ive never had a issue with any of my Kigan, Pac Bay or Evolve(13) guides. Also the new KR concept from Fuji is supposed to be a improvement from the SIC set...

Any input is appreciated! Thanks

Any of the guide models and systems will work equally well if implemented correctly. The nice thing about the MicroWave system is that you can use a wide range of reel sizes with no ill effect on casting. The affect can be minimized though either way. If no one gets back to you here, just google "micro wave guide"

If you want the option of using more than 1 reel, go with the microwave. Otherwise SiC works, too. They are pretty much equal, it's just the microwaves are more versatile reel wise.

it will only be a stradic ci4 2500 so he can do a sic guide set at the perfect measurements

What blank are you going to use? I'm a big fan of the MHX.

same as Roadwarriors ;) basically same rod but for Shaky heads and senkos rather than just senkos. Dvt will vouch I came to him for said rod while RW's was still being built so I'm not copying lol

I'm a big fan of Alconites. For freshwater applications, they work equally as well as SiC for much less money. I believe that Alconite is lighter than SiC too. I read that somewhere, but can't recall where.

I have a few sets on Microwaves, but haven't completed a rod with them. I wrapped up a set just to try for a day and they seem to work as advertised. I'll have to put finish on that rod and give it a season before I can comment on them.

The next spinning rod I build for myself will utilize the KR system.  DVT will hook you up though, you'll be happy with whatever you decide to go with.

I like a mix of alconite reduction guides and recoil running guides using the New guide concept method. Built two rods so take that with a grain of salt.

I've been bugging Mike since I joined this site and he has always given me an educated and unbiased answer to any questions I've had.

Like jrob (another very knowledgeable member) said whatever you and him choose; I highly highly doubt you will be disappointed.

My rod will work just fine for shakey heads.

If you're using line straight through, rather than braid and a leader, micro guides make a rod blank much more sensitive due to having less weight hanging from the blank. I really doubt it makes much difference whether you use micro wave system or sic rings to get you down to the micro guides.

If you are using braid and a leader you may or may not have trouble with the micros depending on the knot you use and how long your leader is. If you're gun shy on the micros, get the lightest rings you can afford in conventional sizes. I only use micros these days on my rods.

Talked to Mike last night, Im going balls to the wall and getting the guides you went with. 1/8-3/16 SHs + worms are gonna be the main purpose and 5" senkos w/ 4/0 ewg on occasion. :) I don't know how I'm going to wait for this in suspense for a month!

Wow, only a month wait? That's pretty Quick for a custom build.

Microwave is a good system, glad your rod pleases you.   There is a misconception re the issue of Microwave vs SIC.  SIC is a top quality ring material available in a number of geometries.  I think what is referred to in the beginning of Microwave vs SIC really means Microwave vs. "Fuji KLH SYSTEM".  Both systems work on the same principal, which is reducing the friction of the line going through the guides quickly, with few reduction guides, which are usually smaller and TALLER than we have used in the past.  You can do Micowave with two different ring hardnesses and two different finishes, and you can do KLH with two different ring hardnesses and I believe 3 different finishes.  But it is the geometry of the system that is significant.  Advantages of Microwave?  Simple to set up, no options, just buy the guides and space them per the Amtac recipe.  Advantages of KLH?  More options on finish and setup.  You can design the guide system with the first two or three guides Fuji KLH, then use other guide sizes and even other manufacturer's guides to the end of the rod.  For example, I have built a steelhead rod with KLH titanium guides for the first three, then dBlue titanium micros to the end, and they all match just fine.  To understand the KLH system go to Fuji's website  http://anglersresource.net/

That reel is very light. Might want to look at titanium alconites. At least for the 1st three stripper guides before you get to the choker. Maybe a ss sic tip top. The polished guides look pretty close to titanium. It will put a dent in your wallet though. Will you be using braid?
