Roadblock Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 So a local shop has a few of these sitting in the clearance bin for. I checked Bass Pro and Cabela's Online, Dicks, Amazon etc and they seem to run right around $159~169.00 new. I'm a Shimano fan myself, I have a couple older Shimano Spinning Reels and I've also got a new 2014 Shimano Curado 200I Baitcaster. I'm pretty brand loyal to Shimano you might say. I was all set to buy a Shimano Symetre 2500, used from a local guy for $60.00 dollars, comes in the box with EVERYTHING (used for only part of this season) but then I happened to see these Smoke's in my local shop. I knew when I saw them they were $150+ dollar reels so I did a quick Google search on the above part number. Thoughts on this reel? I know Quantum is kind of then under dog in the industry but my wife has an older Quantum and it seems to be holding up well. Not a $170.00 dollar Quantum but still. Just looking to add another spinning setup to the family, all of our current spinning reels/rods are more for pan fish, they struggle to pull in any decent sized Bass. Sounds like the Smoke would be a good reel for the price, but never hurts to ask! Thoughts? Quote
Yeti Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 After looking at a few reviews myself and the going price on Ebay, I would say jump on it. If you don't like it, you should definitely be able to recoup your costs. Hell, I'd probably buy one off you for that price! Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I like Quantum, I don't know what everyone's problem is with the company. I say give it a shot. Quote
CJV Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Quantum's stuff isn't that great I had bought an EXO and Smoke bait casting reels when they were first released and after one season both of them sounded like old coffee grinders. However for $60 you don't have much to lose. Quote
Roadblock Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 Yeah I think I'll pick one up for the wife tonight. She has two rods that her ex had bought for her years ago and only one of them has a reel. The nicer one of the two has a little tiny Quantum pan fish spinning reel on it and it really struggles to pull in Bass. She always says but I don't need a new reel, I like fighting them! Well it's not really fighting them as much as the reel is just too d**n small for anything larger than sunfish! The pole can definitely take a larger reel. Then she has a little lite-medium rod that we can toss her current Quantum on that will give her a spare for a loaner. OK everyone, thanks for the feedback! Going to give it a shot! Quote
FSUMF333 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I would grab it. I don't have the spinning reels but I have a couple of the baitcasters. I love mine & I have never had any of the issues people talk about mine are still smooth as butter, you won't be disappointed. Quantum's get a bad rap because of the occasional lemon. 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 No brainer ! Too bad it isn't a PTS, I could go for that in a big way Quote
Super User Scott F Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 I like Quantum spinning reels a lot, it's all I use. Be aware that on all the new Quantum reels there is no switch to turn off the anti-reverse. Not a big deal for guys who never use it, but if you do, it ain't there! Quote
dustin11 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I have 2 smoke 25's and a 30. I like all 3 of them. I have had one for over 2 years and use it frequently, it has held up fine. The 40 isn't as light as the 25 and 30, but it will be a good reel. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 Price them at fish and save if he has them. I still have my first Wal-Mart bubble Pac quantum spinning reels. They been well used but maintained. I used these at a time when money was tight. I used quantum rods and reels and still use some even today. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 6, 2014 Super User Posted August 6, 2014 Snag them. That's a heck of a deal. Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Well... I got one of them. It was actually my "local" Cabela's that was clearancing them out. They are still listed at full price on Cabela's online. Soooooooo I went in today and was going threw the boxes, most of them were beaten to hell. People had opened them, ripped them, taken the reels out of the bags etc. I kinda fished threw the pile looking for the box that was the most non-damaged. They have maybe 10 left or so? Anyway I find one that looks like it's NEVER been touched. I noticed that one is marked $29.99.... It was the ONLY one that said $29.99 too. Yeah so I bought that one. Definitely mis-marked it but hey not my fault! I wish they would have had a second one that said $29.99, I would have bought too. I took the pictures at Cabela's but I didn't even notice untilI I got home that it's not even the right price tag. I looked closely and the tag has NOT been tampered with. It has very clean edges. It was a new tag. I'm almost wondering if an employ didn't put a wrong tag on there so a buddy could come scoop it up for $30.00 dollars or something? I'm wondering if that might not be the case because it was buried at the very back of the shelf behind ALL the others. I had to dig to find it. Who knows... I'm not complaining to anyone! Here is a picture of the one I bought and a picture of what all the other ones said. I'll give you your money back! Quote
Roadblock Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 Yeah it's a REALLY nice reel. It's VERY smoooooooooth! Bought it for my wife. I just bought myself a new Shimano Curado 200I baitcaster. Was my first baitcaster. This was replacing my 1985 Shimano TX-110Q spinning reel. My wife was rocking an older Quantum so I thought at $67.98 it would get a GREAT deal based on the feedback I got here and reviews I read but hey, even better at $29.99 right?! Anyway like I said, I'm not going to complain to anyone! I really want a second one of these reels to upgrade my old spinning rod now too but I would "almost" have a hard time paying $67.98 for another one when I scored this Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted August 6, 2014 Super User Posted August 6, 2014 Heck of a reel man! Best reel you will own trust me and especially for $30 lol I started off with the Smoke 25 spinning reel got that for $160, I wish I got mine for $30 and that mismarked price tag is what some employees do my buddy found 2 g loomis rods at DSG one was marked $100 and the other was $30. Then I found a guy selling his Smoke spinning reel with an Abu Garcia Veritas for $100. My Quantum Smoke Inshore baitcast reel $220 is my favorite frog reel! Quantum sold me on the smoke series can't wait for the new ones later this year! Quote

Super User F14A-B Posted August 6, 2014 Super User Posted August 6, 2014 I used a Cabo 40.. Quite a nice reel @ over 2 bills, You may never get another deal like that. Lucky You! Quote
