Super User Choporoz Posted August 3, 2014 Super User Posted August 3, 2014 I've got rapala mini, which I like...BUT, next one will definitely have a gripper. That big dull hook gets to be a PITA Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted August 3, 2014 Super User Posted August 3, 2014 That big dull hook gets to be a PITA Try sliding the hook up the gill and weigh them from the jaw bone instead of puncturing an unnecessary hole in their skin. Just be careful not to grab the actual gills with it. To make your life even easier, buy a fish grip for $12 and hook the scale to that instead. Google - Fish Grip 2 Quote

Google - Fish GripIf you're just weighing them, the fish grip sounds like a good idea maybe except for the xtra ounces added to the bass' weight.Personally, if I'm weighing fish the I'm going to puncture a small hole anyway for a cull tag. If you leave the cull tag in the gill opening in the live well for a while it will do a lot more damage to the bass than a lip puncture, especially if there are several bass in the well. Also, a small puncture will heal quick and does very little to no harm to the bass' health. Not trying to say your wrong by no means just wanted to clarify that Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted August 3, 2014 Super User Posted August 3, 2014 I would never leave a cull tag in a fish like that. I also wouldn't use a giant dull hook to puncture in a fish, it's not how its meant to be used for weighing fish. Cull clips are much thinner and pointer than most of the scale hooks out there. The accu-scale like I use allows you to tare the scale once you have something like a fish grip on it for weighing purpose. Or just weight the fish grip which is roughly 4 ounces, and deduct it from your total weight. Quote
Kevin22 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 $12 fish gripper and a $5 luggage scale off ebay. Mine is accurate to within 0.5 ounce (checked with certified check weights). Quote

Besides using a accu-cull clip (which I will never use), even though it says fish stay clipped...a "clip" is one less thing I won't to worry about over time that could fail, especially when it stays submerged under water for hours on end. I always catch and release....use additives in my live well, deflate swim bladders when necessary and cut hooks off if I ever gut hook a bass. Have had 2 bass die on me in the many years Ive been tournament fishing and those wen't in the fryer. Long story short, when it comes to fish care, a small puncture is very miniscule in my book. Letting a bass touch the carpet or ground for the small water fisherman is more harmful....just saying Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted August 3, 2014 Super User Posted August 3, 2014 You misinterpreted my post. I understand exactly what you're talking about and I agree with you. I was merely stating that using dull scale hook to puncture a bass for weight is unnecessary. The culling thing is a different subject. Tight lines Quote

THE_Vue's Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I've had 3 rapala's. The touch, pro guide and an older version... Out of the 3 I like the pro guide more. Just lasted longer for some reason. Haven't tried the Accu yet. I still have the pro guide but what Im doing now the pro guide can't do. Get wet like the Berkley TEC Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 4, 2014 Super User Posted August 4, 2014 Good discussion. Yes, I do generally put the scale under the gill plate, but for whatever reason, not all bass are created equal and it does slide out at times. I am ordering a Fish Grip and I think that will solve any and all problems - most importantly, the one about burying trebles in my fingers. 2 Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Believe it or not, this is a good scale. You may have to put a bigger hook or clip on it. I have turned lots of guys on to this and they all love it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/20g-40Kg-Pocket-Digital-Scale-Electronic-Hanging-Luggage-Balance-Weight-/171155983110?pt=US_Pocket_Digital_Scales&hash=item27d9b10b06 Quote
livetofish28 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I use the rapala digital 50 lb one with no problems. Just hook them in the gill plate Tight lines Andrew Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted August 4, 2014 Super User Posted August 4, 2014 I am not a "hater" in most things but do NOT get the Berkley Digital scale. It may work okay when it works but that "when" will be short-lived. Mine broke in less than a year (with light usage). On the BPS website, most of the good reviews came from folks who had not had it very long. It has a lot of BAD reviews-one of them being mine. Quote

Fisher-O-men Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 You wil like it. I have three of them. Just make sure it is set for lbs and not kg or you will think it is crazy! I have tested mine on known weights and they work perfectly. If anyone is worried about the "Made in China" thing, your name-brand scales are probably made there as well. Quote
