Bass2124 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 After having some success drop shotting on a recent fishing trip I think I am going to purcahse a new spinning reel. I have the Pfluegar President but wanted to try to upgrade a bit. I saw a recent review on the mitchel pro 300 but it is about same price as the president but it said it was the best reel under $100. Any suggestions? Quote
EvanT123 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Well I could be an a** and say look down on this page of threads and the next page as there are 2-3 threads some with multiple pages discussing the subject matter. For $100 I'd be looking at a pfluger supreme or diawa lexa. If you really want to treat yourself use what you have save up another $40 and get a shimano stradic fj 1000 or 2500 off that auction site. Super User iceintheveins Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 Go with the next level of pflueger, but if I were you the president is so good I would just get some lures with the money. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 I don't see a reason to upgrade reels since the president is such a nice reel for the money. You can check out the okuma rtx 25 or 30 though. It's very light and smooth. The only difference is line capacity and drag power. I have the 25 and it holds more than enough line for me and the drag hasn't failed me yet. It's an impressive little reel for $75. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 6, 2014 Super User Posted August 6, 2014 I always liked the shimano sahara. Great basic reel that gets the job done. 1 Quote
PJBoudzy Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 sedona, sahara, president, supreme. anyone will be fine. 1 Quote
Yeti Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I second the Sahara. I have an older one from 2007 that I have done virtually no maintenance on, and the thing is nearly as smooth as the day I bought it. 1 Quote

Any suggestions? I have a Mitchell 300 Pro. I like it a lot. Unfortunately, I don't think it's much of an upgrade at all over the President. Like I said, I like the Mitchell, but the President is such a good value, I'd consider them in the same ballpark as far as quality goes. I would probably go with another President or a Supreme, although I haven't used a Supreme, so I can't comment on how much of a step up it might be. Quote
ColdSVT Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Symetry sahara president lews All good stuff and in your budget Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted August 6, 2014 Super User Posted August 6, 2014 Supreme is on sale at Cabelas for $79 Supreme XT is $119 Quote
Bass2124 Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll try out the Supreme or stay with the President and buy a few extra lures as suggested. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 7, 2014 Global Moderator Posted August 7, 2014 Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll try out the Supreme or stay with the President and buy a few extra lures as suggested. I have a few Supremes and Presidents. Do yourself a favor and stick with the President and use the money you would have spent on baits or whatever. The difference just is not worth the extra $40 IMO. Plus I've had problems with the screws falling out of the frame of the Supremes and I have another that the drag doesn't work at all, it's always at 100% so it won't slip no matter how hard you pull. Never had any problems with the Presidents though. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted August 7, 2014 Super User Posted August 7, 2014 Another vote for Shimano. Symetre or Sahara. Quote

Bedore Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I like the Abu Garcia Orra S. Comes with 2 spools and has an alloy frame. Should be able to pick it up for around $70.00. I also have a Pflueger President that I like as well. Quote
DTack Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Personal preference here I have always been really impressed with a Shimano Symetre, I've never been able to justify a higher cost on a spinning reel personally. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 7, 2014 Super User Posted August 7, 2014 I'm a long time Shimano fan. I have a half dozen of them now, mostly Saharas & Symetres. Great reels without a doubt. However, I've recently acquired a Pflueger President and I gotta tell ya, this is one heck of a reel! Even smoother than my Shimanos, if that's possible! Time will tell whether or not it can hold up as well as the Shimanos. But I'll just bet it will. Very cost effective as well. Quote

Amazing reel for the price and quite possibly one of the more underrated spinning reels out there for less than $100.00. I tried a Shimano Sonora and ended up returning it for another reel, but I am currently considering the Symetre or Saros. Quote
