New Rigging For Rage Toads

Owner just brought out a new 5/0 Toad Double twistlock hook. This is what a rage toad looks like cradled within the hook. For you guys missing hook ups on a single hook this might be the ticket.

You can skin hook them if that is an issue. If you are talking about the twin hook configuration under the belly that could be more surface area to pick up debris. I have thrown one yet, just got the hooks in.

You can skin hook the frog in the back and I think it would be a great setup

That looks great Dwight! I think I'll be giving that a try. A have a few packs that smell too much like plastic and not enough like fish slime.

Interesting, I wonder how well the toad will stay cradled in there?

I saw these on TW about a month or so back, they sold out almost immediately and then I didn't hear so much as a peep about them on any of the boards so I figured they must be fantastic and no one wants it to get out yet.

 

I can tell you this I'm an Owner hook's guy and I'd been able to hold out because I'd told myself I didn't need them I wasn't having any trouble hooking fish on the single Owner Twistlock (which is 100% true) but after seeing this pic and seeing hoe perfectly it "fits" the Rage Toad I don't think I can resist much longer. Definitely let us know how they actually work, especially how snag prone it may or may not be Dwight.

I have always thrown the rage toad on a Stanley double take hook. Same basic concept. It works great!

The double Toad hooks are great and in most situations. Haven't had the chance use the Owner model but I've used other brands in the past tweaking the hooks together just like the one photo'd to better cradle the toad. As noted previously in the thread, super thick veg is a challenge unless you take the time to skin hook. Also you can tweak the hook point slightly downward for better skin hook, more weedless and doesn't discourage hook-up % at all IMO.

Owner makes great hooks so this set up will definitely pierce some lips.

Thanks for sharing Dwight! After my post, I've been living up in a fishing lodge for the last few weeks and have tried all sorts of different rods for toads. Finally figured out that a soft tip was key. (Tried to find a rod with a similar tip as the g loomis TWFR after holding it)

The single hook has been doing alright, but I will be trying the double in the near future.

Stanley already has these double frog hooks with twistlock out or awhile I found out today. Couldn't find them at Gander (they used to sell them, guy said they don't anymore). Didn't have them at the local Woodbury Cabelas (smaller store then their destination stores, so no surprise).

 

 

 

Went to Walmart and found them. lol. Who would have thought? Found the Stanley double frog hooks with weight and without. I bought one of each.

 

 

 

I only use hooks with twistlocks (usually Gamakatsu's) when using Ragetail Toads because when I rigged toads with regular hooks they would get peeled back and ruined. Switched to twistlocks about 5 years ago and haven't had that problem since.

 

 

Also found an Arbogast Buzz Plug Jr. there for $5.96 and couldn't pass up getting one just to try it for that price.

I've been using (and giving free advertising for ) the Stanley Double-Take as well. Excellent hook, I prefer the unweighted version to really get it thru the crud.  The Double-Take fits all the frogs I use (zoom, ribbit and rage), but does not cradle the bait like the pic shows. I wonder if the frog only being anchored at the nose will preserve the bait or if more will be lost.

Do you have to hook yours through the legs I assume?

Yep, the double take hook hook through each leg. It doesn't affect the action of the frog though.

Been doing well this year with the rage tail toad. I'll have to try that set  up.
