Jay E. Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I'm thinking about buying one to these two reels-(Abu Garcia REVO STX) and (Shimano Chronarch). Does anyone have any PROS/CONS they'd be willing to share? I'm leaning more toward the REVO but I'm open to anything. Thanks Quote
thehooligan Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 My vote is chronarch. Pair of hedgehogs or bocas, 2 brakes on, set it and forget it 4 Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 My vote is chronarch. Pair of hedgehogs or bocas, 2 brakes on, set it and forget it X2. Even stock, I have one brake on and the tension loose. I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but for me there is no scenario in which that Revo comes close to the CH200E. 3 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted August 2, 2014 Super User Posted August 2, 2014 I'd take the Chronarch, even if the STX was 1/2 priced. It's just a much better reel. 1 Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I'll start off by stating these 2 facts, 1 - I'm a Shimano guy to the bone and 2 - I've never even fished with a Revo, all I've ever done is mess around with them at the tackle shop. I own 6 E series reels; one 50 size, one 300 size, and four 200 size. I've fished them all pretty hard with the exception of the 50, especially the 200's and I haven't had so much as a single minutes worth of trouble out of one of them. They are super versatile reels because they come in three gear ratios, they are very simple to break down and maintain yourself (only needs to be done once a year unless you use them in the salt), the are very easy to "tune"/upgrade, and last but most importantly in my book they're super reliable. I'm not at all saying the Garcia isn't a good product, I'm simply saying I have zero experience with them whatsoever. In fact I don't even know anyone who fishes one. All my buddies either fish Shimano, Quantum, or Daiwa. My entire point to you is simply this, there's almost no way you get let down buy purchasing a Chronarch 200E. 2 Quote
SenkoGuru Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I believe the Shimano is a much better baitcaster than the Abu. I've owned both, still own the Chronarch but sold the STX because it just didn't feel to be on par with the other reels I own. BTW, I'm a Daiwa fan. 2 Quote
timsford Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Im a daiwa guy personally because i like their braking system better but have owned a curado e and a revo sx in the past. I ended up selling both of them when i got hard up for cash but i still wish i had my curado e. The revo i dont miss at all. Curados/chronarchs are much easier to do maintenance on and are bulletproof reels that will last forever with proper maintenance. The revos are decent reels but imo the shimanos blow them out of the water. You might also look into the new curado i they are getting rave reviews but imo cant go wrong with the e series. And the lews tp and bb1p are also much superior to the revos as far as comfort and casting. Just my opinion for what its worth but i have owned all these reels at one time or another and still have the lews reels and wish i had my e series back. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 3, 2014 Super User Posted August 3, 2014 Having owned an older STX I would go with the Chronarch. 1 Quote
TrippyJai Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I've never owned a STX so I cannot comment on it. Like others have mentioned, the E series are a set and forget reel with the braking system. I had over 20+ E series reels all together. I set it to 2 brakes on and never had to change them under any fishing situation. When the wind blew like crazy, tighten up the cast control knob a tad and change casting style to a lower trajectory. If that wasn't good enough, up size the weight will help. 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 3, 2014 Super User Posted August 3, 2014 Like others have mentioned, the E series are a set and forget reel with the braking system. This is HUGE in my book! 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Which Chronarch, 200E or 150 Ci4? The 200E and STX are comparable with the STX having dual braking if that's of any interest to you. The Ci4 is a step above either. Neither is head and shoulders over the other. Comes down to personal preference and the deal. 2 Quote
ColdSVT Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I have both...they are both very nice reels but chronarch performs better in almost every way. The chronarch is simple to adjust, casts better and palms better for me. I think the stx is a hair smoother on the retrieve. One thing i dislike about my STX is it seems like i have to clean it more often than the chronarch (same for my curado and citica) and i use the stx less. I also notice my Lews Tourny Pro needs cleaned more often as well. Honestly i think my Lews tourny Pro compares closer to my chronarch...but once again i feel the chronarch has the edge only it is much much smaller of an edge 1 Quote
Solution Jay E. Posted August 3, 2014 Author Solution Posted August 3, 2014 Just bought the Shimano. Thanks for the advice guys 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 4, 2014 Super User Posted August 4, 2014 Just bought the Shimano. Thanks for the advice guys Congratulations. I'm positive you will like it. My STX and Chronarchs are older models (Gen1, 101A and 100B). When it comes to distance, I can't say that one is better than the other. The STX with its magnetic only brakes can be touchier than the Chronarchs with light lures. Not so much with heavier weights. Either will bomb heavier weights. I do like that 100B, tho. Quote

A lot of guys don't like the old Chronarch B because they complain that they're to heavy, let me tell you that never bothers me and the CH B is one of the best low pro reels ever made. Bomb proof, cast great, pitches great, very good drag, great factory bearings that actually aren't packed with grease. Total package that still holds its own today, I love mine. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 4, 2014 Super User Posted August 4, 2014 Set and forget brakes on the E, that is all that needs to be said Quote
