I noticed that VMC came out with a new hook called the Powershot which is a bigger version of their Spinshot hooks. They tout the benefits of less twisted line and a more enjoyable fishing experience.

My question is, do you think that the swiveling action of the hook is actually beneficial/necessary, or is it just another way to get you to spend more money on specialized tackle?

Personal preference.

I don't use them and don't plan to use them.

Give them a shot and let us know what you think.

The design will reduce line twist, but so does taking the time to rig your bait straight on a normal hook.

I tried the SpinShot hooks on my drop shotting rigs last season. Gave up on them as I lost a much higher percentage of bass on the first jump. Not sure why this is, but after the 6th. or 7th. loss, I went back to my tried & true, the Gamakatsu Splitshot/Dropshot hook in size #2. I've caught a lot of samllies on that hook and manged to boat most of them. JMO! :)

I've been using the spin shots for over a year and they really eliminate line twist. Haven't had the issues crestliner had even when smallie fishing. I'd say give them a shot and see what you think.

Also tried the spinshot's and I don't think I have lost a fish on one yet. I like them in the size 1-2 and like the set up.  Makes switching weight lenghts much easier as well as being able to use a lighter line going to the weight especially in some nastier areas as so I have a break away sinker using cheaper sinkers then the dropshot weights.  And they don't seem to take away from the baits (Keitech swing and live impact) action.

They aren't terrible hooks but I personally prefer to use a #1 or #2 Owner Mosquito hook. Just my personal preference though.

Never tried them, nor plan to. I usually don't have issues with line twist on a DS. I just make sure the hook is tied perfectly straight and the bait is perfectly straight on the hook. Also I reel very slowly, even when bringing it in for another cast.

Line twist can be a problem with spinning reels. If you use braid with FC leader for drop shot rigs on spinning tackle it will nearly eliminate line twist. If you wacky rig the drop shot, that also reduces line twist when reeling up the rig.

I have been using the VMC Spinshot hooks with good success.  I use a 1/0 hook with the Zoom Z Drop and have not had any line twist or hookup problems.

When I first started dropshotting, I attached a three foot length of mono to my main line using a swivel, attached the hook with a palmar knot about a foot down and a dropshot weight somewhere below. I liked the ease of attaching the leader and changing the position of the weight up or down the line. This is the set-up I still use, but I rarely change the weight's position anymore. Never had a line twist issue.
