Kevin Beachy Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 My dad uses some roller chain lube and thought it would work good for the gears in a reel. So i put some on. It seemed to work. I was wondering if its good for this or not. I have metal gears in my reel. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 30, 2014 Super User Posted July 30, 2014 You should use grease on gears. Roller chain lube is a high viscosity oil, but it will still break down too fast, compared to grease. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Do not use an oil product on your gears, or you will have an oily mess inside your reel. There is a product called SuperLube, which many reel repair/cleaning services use on the gears and it will stay in place. You can Google SuperLube and find many retailers who sell it by the tube. It is excellent for gears. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Chain Lube is an oil with a "tackifier" additive to prevent flinging off. This is no good on reel gears because it will gum up and collect abrasive dirt etc, A simple marine or drag grease or synthetic like Super Lube is all you need and readily available. Spool bearings can be maintained with anything from sewing machine oil to 3in1 to actual reel oil like Oust. The Bantam oil that come with Shimanos is pretty good. You just want something light and stable temp wise. Quote
