Tomorrow I'll be attempting making outriggers for my kayack. Have any of you guys made these before? I've been looking o youtube and finding random stuff online but if anyone has experience it help a lot!

A few questions I have.

1.) Do I use the longer boat fenders or the shorter and thicker ones.

2.) The length of the outrigger. The longer the better say 4 feet or 2.5 feet?

Griz-

Before I go with boat fenders, see if you can get some lobster buoys. This is what I used when I made outriggers for my canoe. They were awesome. I used PVC - might've been 1/2 or 3/4" inside the buoys, joined with a T to a 1" length of PVC, stuffed with a dowell rod for stiffness.

I put each outrigger in a Scotty rod holder drilled out for some removable D pins (brain completely failing me right now as to what they're called).

But if you're already committed to the boat fenders, both should provide plenty of buoyancy. The longer ones would supply more.

As for the length, what I did was place my canoe (and later a yak) on the ground flat. Then I'd place the outriggers in the Scotty holders to see where they (lobster buoys) just touched the ground - with the yak level. I'd mark the PVC, drill and done.

So when you get on the water, your buoys are level, and already providing support with your added weight. From here you can adjust them if needed.

Ohk thanks! I have a 10 foot piece of 3 inch pic. That I'm going to cut up but as for the middle block or where the pvc is connected to each side I'm not, sure what to use. I'm trying to keep the cost down so I'm not really trying to buy the rod holders. And my uncle had a bunch of old boat buoys that he finds in the river so I picked up some of those to use.

This is where I'm at 2 piece of 3 foot pvc

I have 4 bbuoys to use. Also have 2×8 pressure treated to cut for,a platform to hold the buoys. I'll,post pics tomorrow when,I'm tinkering

The biggest obstacle you will have is mounting them in the right spot on the kayak, so they are not in the way when paddling. But I'm sure you thought of that.

ohk well i got it together with the buoys tied on the end of the pvc tight enough to try out in pool its stable but i think oncec i figure out a way to make the attachment a little more secure at the bracket that will help.

also now im trying to find away to take the bouys 2 on each side and construct them securely together and on the pvc.

tries the first stage out in the pool seemed to hold up well until one of bouys turned aroud  and i fell out haha

Griz, have a look at this guy's stabilizers. He used boat buoys. You might need to have a log in to view pix...
