Bass_Fanatic Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Ok I have been throwing a 3/4 oz fb jig ALOT the past couple years and have tried it on a lot of my current rods. The best I've found is my Powell Endurance 714c. I like the way it handles the jig, but feel its a bit to lite and short. I'm looking for the perfect fb jig rod, what do y'all think? So far I've thrown it on a phenix recon 764, Powell endurance 723, 775, and 714, st croix avid 7'mh, and a falcon cara 7'h. Here are a few rods I'm leaning towards. 1. Powell endurance 764 2. Dobyns champion 734 or 735 3. Diawa tatula 7'4" h frog rod Quote
Grantman83 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I would actually suggest the champ 764 as it has some added Length and power which I prefer for deeper water presentations. Great Carolina rig rod as well. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 i would not use the 734 or the 735. The 734, while versatile as versatile can get, doesn't really have the power you're looking for for deep heavy hook FB jigs but has the right tip. The 735 could work but it just doesn't have the qualities i want in a FB rod. It's my favorite frog rod though. I'd look at either the Champ 764 or the DX784. Quote
dam0007 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I bought the irod genesis 2 Fred's magic stick exclusively for football jigs on deep structure. Love the rod. It is also a great frog rod and flipping stick. I had a thread on here going for quite a few pages not too long ago. Do a quick search. A lot of guys chimed in with recommendations Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 30, 2014 Super User Posted July 30, 2014 You have a lot of choices, Lamiglas INF 735C is excellent. Tom Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 30, 2014 Super User Posted July 30, 2014 This is where I get confused, the football jigs I fish have standard wire hooks and a lot are made with light wire. The reason is so you can fish them deep on 10lb to 14lb line and not have a problem with hook penetration. I got caught up in using big rods and I was using my flipping stick and now I use the rod I pitch with, a 7'2" MH-XF and it is a powerful rod but I didn't need to pick up all the line and when I made the switch my hook up percentage went through the roof. Try using Football heads with light hooks instead of the flipping hooks, not only does the hook up percentage change but you can downsize tackle without any negative affects. You hear guys saying to reel set when you get a bite to keep from blowing the jig out of the fish's mouth but with the lighter rods, a 4 power has enough power if you have a jig with a standard or light wire hook, you don't get that problem as much. Bass_Fanatic Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 Has anyone thrown a 3/4 oz fb jig on a megabass orchid XX mh extreme mission rod? I'm gonna check out that laming las too! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I switched over to a 7'11" Hvy for 3/4-1 oz footballs. I was using a 7'4" heavy. Quote
DTack Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 If I were you, I would be looking at the Dobyns 764c Champion as well. It does have a bit more power, what size fish are you fishing for? Smalljaw brings up a good point with the hook type. Quote
Zach P Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Personally i would stick with Powell. I've never used the TIMAX series of their rods and usually stick with the endurance, max, and infernos I'm quite sure the 734 HCF should do the job. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 30, 2014 Super User Posted July 30, 2014 I make my jigs with Gamamkatsu # 114, 5/0 hook, .046 dia forged wire. My jig rods are 6' 10" long and 5 or 6 power, heavy fast action custom rod from ALX. The Lamiglas Infinity series and Loomis NRX are very similar rod blanks. I am using 10 to 14 lb Sunline Super Sniper green in very clear water. Average cast is over 90' in water to 35' deep during the summer. No problems getting good hook sets on big bass because I don't use the rod to initially get the hook point started into the basses mouth, I use a reel set, then follow up with a firm rod sweep. It's nearly impossible to use the rod set at 90+ feet away. Wrote a article for In-Fisherman 20 years ago called Horizontal Jigging that details how to hook set when making long casts. Tom 2 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 30, 2014 Super User Posted July 30, 2014 Power for me Heavy... Taper is Fast and, moderate fast, Spinning I will use a medium power with fast... For smaller lite wire swimjigs and such.. 7'11, 7'5" 7' that's all I use, I don't miss many. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 Well I wasn't really looking to buy this rod, but I found a gloomis mossy back bcr874 for $70 today so I bought it. Gonna give it a go with the fb jigs to see how well it handles them. If I don't like it I figured I could sell it and but the Lamiglas, Megabass, or Dobyns. Quote
Diggy Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 You have a lot of choices, Lamiglas INF 735C is excellent. Tom Agreed. Ive been pleased with this rod Quote
Grantman83 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I use a dx 784. It's a heavy power but the taper is a fast bordering on moderate fast action which helps compensate when trying to drive light wire hooks into the fish in deep water. For rese reasons, I don't really use it for shallow water pitching or jigs as I prefer a quicker transition into power like my dx 745. The 784 is also my crig rod. As you have read, people have their preferences and I'm sure all of them do the job well. Good luck! Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted July 31, 2014 Super User Posted July 31, 2014 Anything in the Fitzgerald line that would make a nice football jig rod ? Quote
