Advice On Some Rods And Reels

I'm looking to upgrade to a decent quality baitcaster after my old one crapped out. I would be willing to spend $100-130 but I really would the best value I can get. I've heard good things about the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifer reel, how does it compare to other reels in the hundred dollar range? Would it be worth spending the extra $30 for a Abu Garcia Revo S, or other similarly priced reels? Would also need reccomondations a decent $20-40 casting rod to go with said reel. I've been satisfied with cheap rods so far so I just need something reliable and durable.

 

Also what is a good $50-60 spinnig combo?

 

By the way everying thing needs to be available from Bass pro.

Any kind of quality in a rod starts around $100 IMO. There are tons to choose from, as well as reels in that price range. I bet a 100 dollar would blow your mind, especially sensativity department, if all you have fished was 30-40 dollar rods. Many of them also come with a decent warranty, not so much with the el cheapos. I would recommend saving a little money up, and buying a higher quality set up. You won't regret it.

By the sounds of things, you're probably better off picking up a decent used rod and reel. This is the best bang for your buck, especially if you can find it locally, at least the rod. That will save you a bunch on shipping. There are tons of deals on used reels, it just takes a little looking. Unless you're prepared to spend around $200 on new stuff, it's probably not worth it for you.

Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifer is a very good reel for that price. You can also find a very good spinning combo for cheap off ebay or craigslist.

You can get a BPS PQ Combo with a Carbonlite rod...both get rave reviews.  I own two PQs, solid reels. when on sale it's a steal!  I personally feel you need to go Curado level and up to get the next best level.

x2.  Get the carbonlite/pq combo for $160.  One of the best values because you get a $100 rod.  I have more expensive combos, but I still use carbonlite/pq combo on every fishing trip whether I'm bank fishing, kayaking or in the boat.

For a casting rod in your price range, go to Walmart and buy the Lightning Rod Shock. It runs $39 and is a nice quality rod. JMHO

You can get a Tatula for $100 at various places online. It is hands down better than the pro qualifier, and better than any reel in the $100 range. I know that a lot of places (should include BPS) have the Veritas for $60 on clearance. To me it's a decent stick at $100 but a great stick at $60. It would be a night and day difference between the Veritas and a $40 rod. If that is too much, then just save up a little more money and I think it would make your fishing experience a whole lot better. But if you went with a Revo S for $130 and a $40 casting rod you would be at $170. A Tatula at $100 and a Veritas at $60 will be the best bang for your buck at that price range.

The PQ goes on sale regularly, don't pay msrp. On sale, the value is really hard to beat. For bottom contact "feel" techniques, invest the bulk of your budget into the rod.

Do you have a bps gift card or something?  I will reiterate for the money the carbonlite/pq combo is the way to go imo.  As far as spinning combos from bps the pflueger trion combo is $60, but for $70 you can get the pflueger president combo which would be a much better deal.  If you really need to stick to your budget get the trion combo.  I own both reels and really like them, but the president is a much better reel.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will look into all of them. My reasoning behind Bass Pro is because they are the only dedicated fishing supply store I know of in my area, other than walmart and canadian tire.

Ive been looking in the classifieds and found a lightly used ardent edge tour. What would be a fair price to make it a better deal than buying a new Bass Pro PQ?

A Quantum TRAX spinning combo is 60 bucks and pretty light and fairly sensitive for the price, its a pretty smooth 7 bearing reel too.If you spend about $10-20 less on the baitcast reel and more on the rod, or just save a bit more for the rod, they will compliment each other better. You might consider buying the rod n reel as a combo, you usually save some money and the reel and rod work very well together

I have bought my share from BPS and have no real complaints. Bought most rods and reels when they were on sale or a year

end clear out or even a discontinued model significantly discounted. Good stuff.

 

If you're willing to look at Cablela's, they have their flagship reel (Prodigy) on sale for 79.99, normally sells for for 99.99. I own one of 'em and

love it. They also have their Pro Guide IM6 rods on sale for 29.99, normally sold for 49.99. I own one of those, too. Good rod.
