Well this is just my second post and some people might get the idea that I am crazy. But there is a lure out there that I don't think many people have ever heard of. I also don't think they are available just anywhere. So your BPS may not carry them. But this little gem is called an H&H spinner bait. They are relatively small and weigh 3/8 oz. They come in many different colors but I prefer white and blue/chart. I prefer the single blade over the double blade. These things range from .99 to $1.50 so they aren't going to break the bank. I probably have 50 of these just laying in a box. I have caught fish as small as 8" and as big as 22". Maybe someone here has used these and can vouch for me.

Seeing as how we are both from WNY, we probably fish many of the same waters.......he is what you will need to cover the basics:

Soft Plastics: Stick to one or two colors to start with. Green pumpkin and/or watermelon are the best.

Get some 4" and 5" Senko type baits, 3.5" Tubes, and some Zoom flukes

Hard baits: go with natural looking paint schemes, perch, bluegill, baby bass, silver/black, gold black are my favorite.

You'll want some #9 and #11 orginal floating Rapalas, #8 Husky jerks and/or x-raps, #5 and #7 shad raps.......all in the above colors.

Also get some manns baby 1- minus crank baits, and a few 1/2 oz Rat-L-Traps

Top waters.......same colors as the cranks/jerk baits, Rapala skitter pop, , storm chug bug, and heddon tiny torpedo are good baits to start with.

Spinner baits, go with tandem blades (1 willow, 1 colorado) 3/16, 1/4, and 3/8 oz are the best sizes around here. White, White/chart., Chart., and fire tiger.

Same goes for Buzz baits, add black to the buzz baits for night time.

Don't forget to pick up a big black jitter bug.....killer night time bait.

This is what I would consider the "basics" for a shore fisherman, if you are in a boat the list grows..............alot.

I should point-out that favorite lures are highly subjective.

Anyway, a few that I'm continually replenishing are listed below:

> Heddon Super Spook Jr.

> Gambler Cane Toad

> Zoom Super Fluke

> Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap

> Big Hammer Swimbait (1/2 oz Outkast Swim Jig)

> Zoom Big Critter Craw

> Wave Worm Tiki Stick

I agree with the guy who made the comment about the BPS rattle shad. Awsome colrs but the hooks suck. I like that they are 3/8 oz. because I can't heave the 1/4 rattletrap when i want to fish them over grass that is nearly to the surface. A 1/2 trap gets too into the near surface grass too easily. The 3/8 BPS trap is a nice alternative. The only other thing that is not good about them is the durability. My rattletraps have been through hell and back. I cast and hit a piece of wood and it cracked down the middle. I would also say buy jigs and lots of them.

if you want rattle traps get the XPS rattle shads. they work excelent, and BPS is the only place i can find them, last year i caught my bigest bass with them.

even better yet get the  BPS XPS tri vibe...you can adjust it to run deep, medium,or shallow in seconds.it also has an unmatchable action an quality construction one of my go to's so far this year

Get some creature baits like YUM Wooly hawgtails, GYCB The Kreature, Zoom Baby Brush hog. Also I would get some softfrogs/hollow frogs. For hollow frogs I recommend Scumfrogs or Spro Bronze eye frog. For soft frogs YUM Buzzfrog, Zoom Horny Toad, Stanley Ribbit. I would also look into getting a pack or two of Fat Ikas if you don't already have them. For hard baits I would buy a few Xraps and husky jerks. And for topwaters Jitterbugs, Tiny Torpedos, Hula Popper, and some type of chugbait, like a Xcalibur Pop-r, or a rebel Pop-r or chugbug etc. Senkos I can imagine you have them already and if you don't then your really behind times so I won't even bother recommending to buy them. And lastly I would also suggest buying a few booyah spinners, and either booyah buzzbaits or cavitron buzzbaits. Happy shopping  ; :D.

BPS has a great selection of everything. They are a little more expensive than other sportsman's stores though. I go to BPS to get plastics like a certain brand of tubes or certain jig heads/hooks I can't find anywhere else. BPS is the place to go.

Great advice, I fish upstate NY and this guy pretty much summed up my tacklebox. Don't forget jigs though. Get some small finesse jigs and some 1/2 oz  football head jigs for those long summer months when fishing brushpiles and such.

Both the NY guys hammered it ... like the last said get some jigs.  I would add swim jigs to that list but im a bit north of you all.  Im an Northern Upstate guy ;) ... but have fished all the waters down through you all.  Anyway good luck with your shopping trip and have fun in good ol' Auburn :D
