KHOOKS Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 My dad used to use the 5'-11' shad rap SR07 a lot. I'm learning to use crankbaits and not having any luck but just got starting to try them. When would the best time to use this bait. I have got about four different ones baby bass/shad/glas blue shad & a glass chartreuse shad. Most of the other crankbaits I have are the deeper running Bagley's BIII and a couple of Mann's 30+ cranks. All of these are older baits from the late 80's. I don't any newer style ones like squarebills. I guess my ? is if you where triing to catch fish on a Shad Rap SR07 how and when would you use them? And is there a way to make them run as shallow as possible? Quote
smallieking Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 ive never throw the number 7 but the number 6 Is probably the best cold water crankbait ever made.. I fish bluff style banks with a lot of rock and wood. clear water I throw a bluegill or shad color depending on the lake and in muddy water I throw a red craw. Quote
Super User Marty Posted July 28, 2014 Super User Posted July 28, 2014 I wouldn't hesitate to use Shad Raps anytime from spring through fall. 1 Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I like the tight wobble in late winter and early spring. One of my best bass fishing days last year in February was on a #6 perch shad rap. Haven't had much success on them any other time of year. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 28, 2014 Super User Posted July 28, 2014 I won tournaments in Fl. On the St. John's river at Jacksonville.. On a Gold balsa SR.. 7 or a 9 I think it's quite a bait, as well... I can't speak to the plastic though. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 28, 2014 Super User Posted July 28, 2014 The crank I fish the most and that produced my 13.86 lbs PB is the Shad Rap in all it´s sizes and multiple variations. For me Shad Rap season begins Jan1 and ends Dec 31. 2 Quote
Cgrinder Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Shallow Shad Raps SSR05 and SSR07 are good options if you want your crank to run shallower. An alternative is to run your SR07 with 10 lb. mono and keep your rod tip up. That'll keep it from getting too deep. Normally I throw Shad Raps on 4-6 lb. mono or 8 lb. Invizx. You neeeed to check out some of the Custom Ink colors now available in the Shad Rap line. The Caribbean Shad and Blueback Herring patterns look amazing. Quote
NDH Fishing Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Let it float to the top and twitch it about once every 5 to 10 seconds in the morning, from about 9:30 am until 5-6ish pm crank it in at a decent pace and jerk it here and there, and at sunset switch back to letting it float and twitching it. The color you should use depends on the color of the water you fish in. Quote
NDH Fishing Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 AKA topwater morning and late evening, and down deep mid day. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 If you like the 07 size, but want it to run shallower, you can always buy the super shallow version. Which will run 3-5'. They have a different bill on them, and run much shallower, but they have the same action. Also, if you want the lure to suspend and not float up (these are made from Balsa), you can buy the Storm Suspendots and place one under the nose. Or they also make the Shad Rap RS, which is plastic, and it also rattles and suspends (hence the RS part). Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 I use the #5 and #7 regulars. The shallows are good for skinny water. Shad raps call for spinning gear, they will barely throw on a bait caster. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 And yes, one of the finest cranks ever for cold, clear water. 1 Quote
KHOOKS Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Back when he fished these we where in clear water on Lake Lanier, GA. Now I'm fishing on Lay Lake, AL the water is not as clear but not stained to bad. I think I'm going to pick up a few of the shallow runners. And also try out a couple of the KVD 1.5's. Quote

Kevin22 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Shad raps work good. We use them for walleye and catch a ton of bass on them in the process. Actually when I'm casting for walleye I make sure to not get within 10' of shore to limit the amount of bass caught. So, yes, bass love those things! Try the shallow version, or just put it on a 14# mono and it won't go deeper than 6 feet... if you can cast it. If you want an alternative for dirty water, try the berkley flicker shads. They have nearly the same action but are plastic with rattles. Also half the price. 1 Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 The Koppers Livetarget shads are great and cast way better. Only drawback is the $12 price tag. Quote

mayer74 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 What else might bite on these besides bass? These lures sound intriguing. You've got my attention. Quote
Hogsticker Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Always been curious to ask, has anyone found, used, or had better results on a different crank in cooler water Temps? Flat side, square bill, plastic, balsa, etc. Sorry for the hi jack. Quote

The better question is what won't bite a shad rap? I've caught bass, walleye, pike, crappie, perch, bluegill, catfish, shad.... All on a shad rap. Quote
