I feel like recently I've been ripping the spinnberbait out of the bass' mouth more than usual on both Medium and medium heavy rods. Has anyone used crankbait rods or rods with moderate/parabolic bend for spinnerbaits to avoid this issue, or do you prefer something with less bend?

Spinnerbaits are my favorite lure to throw and my set up is a 7' medium heavy veritas paired with a 7:1 pro qualifier and 17lb inviz x. I have thrown one on my glass powell diesel cranking rod and I personally didn't like it.

For spinnerbaits 3/8 and up with decently thick hooks I throw them on a 7' MH fast action but less than 3/8oz I like a medium action

Personally, I like the heavier rods.  I like the backbone since spinnerbaits have heavier wire hooks, similar to a jig.  If I get short strikes the first thing I'll do is speed up my retrieve, usually gets a better reaction.  If that doesn't work I'll slow down.  If that doesn't work I'll try something else.  If that doesn't work I'll blame it on Perch :).  (I do always use a trailer hook)

I do know some guys whose opinion/skills I trust, that use the crankbait style rods though (like a MH-Moderate)....

I think it's one of those grey areas in tackle selection where both answers can be right, just depends on what you like.

I generally fish 1/4 oz spinnerbaits. I like a medium fast in 6'6" or 6'10".

It's funny that you say that Logan because it does seem like a grey area. I've heard varying opinions on this subject. I tend to use trailer hooks when fishing more open water and when it seems like they are short striking and when I'm around cover I'll usually take them off. I've used both MH and H rods for spinnerbaits and usually get about the same results. Most have always been positive I just noticed the other day when a few were grabbing it that I seemed to be ripping it straight out of their mouths which led me to this question. Obviously the idea behind the moderate action rod is that it would allow the fish to have the bait for a little longer.

I use a custom 7' MH glass rod with a moderate tip for all of my spinnerbaits, except for 1 oz spinnerbaits in deep water, then I use a 7'3" Heavy glass rod. I like the moderate tip on the rods a lot better than a MH or Heavy/Fast action graphite rod. Never had a problem with hooksets with the glass rod. I even use the Heavy glass rod for hollow body swimbaits and chatterbaits. Once you use a glass rod for these baits you will love it. I can get you a custom one for a great price too! Shoot me a PM!

I use a either a ML Fast St.Croix Avid spinning rod or a G.Loomis M Mod. Fast Crankbait rod.  If I want to through something deep and heavy, I use a G. Loomis 844c IMX Heavy Fast.

The question can be answered by you if you have a crankbait rod, fish your spinnerbaits with one type, then the other and you be the judge, personally I fish my spinnerbaits with fast action rods..

I use m/f &mh/f rods for them. What type of line do you run with spinners? I use straight mono for the stretch to compensate as I too have experienced this problem.

I like a fast action, but for the past year, the Legend Extreme 7'2" MHM has been very impressive, if under 3/8 oz. I like a MF 7' Avid.

I tried a MHM fast rod and felt like I wasn't getting the hooksets proper.  This even with braid, when I went back to my trusty MH/F rod for SB..it was back on.  I was getting the hook sets I wanted and was landing fish.  Who knows maybe it was all confidence in my MH/F rod..anyway, here's a thought..maybe add a trailer hook?

I use a 7' MH BPS crankin stick for exactly that reason. I felt like I was loosing too many fish with a 7' MH F. Or the ones I would land would have this huge, gaping hole on the membrane of their mouth and I would be amazed they didn't come off. I made the switch a couple years ago and haven't lost many fish on it. The ones I have lost with the CB rod were the result of user error and a wimpy hookset. Not because the rod is too soft.

I don't mind reeling them with a moderate rod, hate casting them with one though. What kind of line are you using? Do you use trailer hooks?

It's usually 12-15 pound fluoro and trailer hooks only in open water. You use trailers around brush and cover you are asking to lose baits.

i generally like a mh/mod for spinnerbaits, other than titanium wire baits.  seems like with those the extra spring in the wire makes it hard to get a hook in with a moderate action rod.

i do have a daiwa ballistic 6'9 mh/f worm rod that is a fantastic spinnerbait rod.  it's a fast tip, but loads deep into the blank with a fish on.

From what you describe it sounds like you are seeing the bass take the spinner and setting based on that rather than feel, almost like the mistake we often make with a top water. Some adjustment needs to be made bit I don't think the action of the rod is at the root here. I'd make sure the hooks are sharp, add a soft trailer, and try not to be too reactive to visual strikes.

I like enough tip in a rod to help drive a heavy single hook through a gill plate or roof of the mouth at a long distance, moderate action rods just have too much flex in them to fish a spinnerbait the way I like. I also like to be able to feel the blades spinning and the bait ticking the tops of grass, to me a moderate action rod dampens the vibrations. I feel best when I throw them on a fast action rod length depends on the distance I am making my casts, shorter for around docks and heavy cover for the accuracy and longer for open water or weed lines for increased distance.
