FedEx is usually around $30.00 for a 7' rod and if IIRC, the USPS was about the same but that was years ago.

Depending on weight and distance, cost is usually between $20-$30. I usually use UPS for rods. Each company has an inline price tool so it should be fairly easy to compare if you have all the details.

Why is shipping so cheap from even the smaller tackle stores online?

They are discounting the shipping and making up for it with rod price, which is many times still less than retail.

They also usually have business accounts setup with these companies and save some cash that way.

OP I highly suggest shipping in a PVC tube. Also using UPS over USPS. Just my previous experience. Also quotes are spot on. $25-35

They are not paying you to buy from them,,, this should be a real good indication what you are getting when you buy a $50.00 fishing rod!  Think about it, :Idea3:

7' is a tipping point and weight is a factor too. I just shipped a Rod that weighs 4oz. In a 7'2" 3" pvc tube, the package weighed 9# even. I can get away with 2" on a casting rod most times which saves some. When I can get it, I use Central Vacuum pipe. It's sturdy but way lighter than sched.40

Definitely agree, use a pvc tube.

Between the big 3, usps, ups, and fedex, ive shipped and recieved rods and all have been broken. So, i only ship in pvc now.

If you want a guaranteed shipment, id use fedex ground with a pvc tube. I use usps priority from time to time which is the cheapest, but they constantly fail with there tracking system and the rod shows up late or gets lost.
