FishingNY Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 In my area, mainly a long river leading to a decent size lake.. the main thing to fish are Channel Cats. There are ofcourse Largemouth, Smallmouth, yellow perch, northern pike and various amount of baitfish. I havent fished in years and when i have its been for Channel cats because.. well.. YUM. Only ever used hooks/sinkers with bait (shrimp, fermented chicken liver etc) I've been watching alot of videos lately and talking to some local fisherman and i always see them pulling in decent size bass (15-18 inches) so I went home and looked through an old tackle box my grandfather gave me when i was 14. I found some nice jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and some worms (wacky and spinnertail) I headed out this morning with my spinning reel to cast in for an hour or two. Threw on this worn out shad crankbait (i believe atleast) needless to say FIRST cast I pull in a small 11" bass.. All i can say is WOW. I have officially found my new hobby. Nothing like pulling in 4 (small for you guys) but nice size bass for me!! All were between 9-12" and caught on the same shad crankbait!! 6 Quote

Thank you! I need to get out on my boat and give the shores a go. Problem is, I have a 36 ft carver!! Lol Quote
plumworm Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 And soon, very soon, you will be bitten by the "bait monkey" and you end up selling your 36' boat to feed your new , fun habit. Good luck with that. We all started out the same way. You are now one of us. Do not resist, We have you in our power. And, to end this, be sure to join the Shimano "gang" you will not be sorry. Quote
FrogTosser88 Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Well at least you know what they are biting already... maybe go get you a shiny new crank bait... see what happens Quote
BiteFiend Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Welcome! There's a lot of good info on the site. Bass fishing can be addictive. There. You were warned. Now you can't say no one warned you. Lol 1 Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Welcome to the site. That was a truly great first post. Glad to hear that you had success at the river. Lure fishing is a lifestyle. Might want to pick up some new lures for yourself if your grandfather's lures have sentimental value. I recently lost a box of vintage lures, and it was devastating. They were lures that I bought myself, can't imagine if I'd lost one that was given to me by my elders. With that said, there's nothing better than a beat up old crankbait, in my book. Quote

Gunna head to bass pro and get some offset hooks, more worms, maybe a topwater frog! Quote
NathanW Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Oh yeah buddy! I remember when I first tore into some smallmouth from the banks of Potholes Resevoir after a 15 year hiatus from fishing. INSTANTLY HOOKED. I am sure my wife regrets going to that Bachelorette party that weekend and leaving me at home with nothing to do. Life will never be the same, nor will the bank account. Quote
