Hello,

I have two of the above reels with the same issue. One of the internal brakes seems to have an issue. The plastic piece that engages and disengages the spring/brake seems to have lost connection with the spring. If I try to move it the pin, it doesn't want to move.

I find this odd that I am having this issue on two reels that are both less than a year old with very little use.

In the photo, the brake in question is at 9:00.

Any idea if this can be fixed easily by me or do both reels need to be sent in for service?

Sorry, having trouble with the image. The image size on the iPad is too big.

You'll have to send them to Outdoor Reel Repair, they are the only ones that have parts for BPS reels.

If you are near a Bass Pro Shop, take the reels back. There is more than a good chance that they will replace them. (Former BPS employee).

I agree with Hootie. I have had 2 PQ's that had problems. The first one was 5 or 6 years old and all i had to pay was $15 shipping  to get it repaired. The other had a problem with the drag right out of the box. They replaced it with no problem at all. 

 

I was very happy with their customer service.

When my PQ broke (pinion gear) I returned it via mail after having it 11 months with no problem. They even let me add $ and get a Curado to replace it. I would contact BPS they can probably help you.

I can, and do service BPS reels. If new enough I would return them as suggested though. Are you sure you're operating the brakes correctly? It seems like quite a coincidence that two reels have the exact same symptom.

I've never worked for BPS but can support their great customer service.  I bought their 128T kayak in April but discovered in early June what other 128T owners have in that the deck warps in the sun, which prevents the hatches from opening and closing properly.  I called my local store and was told to bring the 128T back with receipt and they'd replace it with a new one, which they did.....  

 

Have always had great experiences at my local BPS.  Take your reels there and make a case, if you have your receipts, even better.

One was bought in September 2013 and the second was in March of 2014.

 

Regarding correct operation?  I've only touched the brake pins 2 or 3 times since I bought the reel.  Perhaps being I newbie I don't understand how they could be operated wrong.  Don't you use move the pin in or out to turn the brakes on and off?  Then just makes sure that you balance the wheel (2 brakes on that are opposite each other)?

Great to hear.  I need to decide if this will be worth the 1.5 hour drive or if I should just mail them back.  I hate to be without 2 of my 4 reels for an extended period of time considering that August will most likely be my last month fishing this year.

Swap them out and pick up a couple of lures while you're there. It is odd that two of them have the exact same problem.

Take the drive and make a fun day of it. Going to BPS is a great way to spend a few hours. Plus, you will be coming home with new reels.

T-Rick, I'm sort of puzzled by your question. I have a couple of BPS PQers. As far as I can tell the internal brakes or pins do not use springs. They either snap inwards towards the spool axis or outwards towards the spool rim. In the out position the outer part of the the pin can move outward, due to centrifical force, and contact the housing which surrounds this assembly when the side plate is on the reel. This causes friction which slows the spool down. The more pins engaged in the out position, the more friction and the more control of the spool.

I think the file will attach now that I have re-sized the image.  Regarding your question, yes, the internal brake uses a pin which appears be connect to a spring.  Check the image out with the spring that appears out of alignment.

Ya that spring is not seated correctly. A relatively easy fix but you shouldn't have to mess with it. I'll be surprised if they don't just swap out the reel(s). While irritating, it's a minor glitch. I wouldn't let it sour you on the PQ as a whole. Especially as sale prices.

Call your local basspro and ask to be transferred to the reel counter and tell the guys what is going on. If you have a receipt showing they are less than a year old they will swap them for new reels on the spot since they are bass pro brand. If you lost your receipt they can pull it up in the system if you have a rewards card or used a credit card to make the purchase (if the store you are going to is the physical location you purchased them, stores cant access receipts from other locations)

 

You should have no problem getting them taken care off, and like DVT said, don't let it turn you away from the PQ's, I own some and you can't beat it for the price.

Wow, I stand corrected. There are tiny little springs there. I never noticed them before. Couldn't see them w/o good light and glasses.

 

As others have said take it back or call customer service to see if they will send you a replacement spool. I wouldn't try to fix those little parts.

I figured I'd update this thread with my results as I made my first trip to BPS today.  I was able to return and exchange both reels without any issues.  Their stock was limited today especially in the left hand models so I did the following:

 

Exchanged the 7.1:1 reel for the same BPS PQ model (even exchange)

Exchanged the BPS PQ 6.4:1 for a Curado 200I in the similar speed range (paid the price difference)

 

I was hoping to get the Curado 200 in the 7.2:1 speed as I plan to use this reel for topwater but they didn't have that one in-stock so my options were limited to the 6.3:1 (CU201I/HG) or select another make/model or get the BPS PQ in the 7.1 ratio.

 

Thanks for all the advice and I hope that I am happy with the new 200I.
