I just got a new 6.4:1 Abu Garcia bait caster and a MH/F rod for heavier lures like spinnerbaits and frogs. I would like your guys' opinions on the line I should put on it. Thanks

For a rod your gonna be throwing frogs and spinnerbaits on I'd go with 50lb braid, or 14lb flouro if the frog fishing isn't in heavy cover....

Yes, when your throwing braid you can completely disregard those line ratings on the rod... Your drag will give before your rod breaks when its working properly anyways so its nothing to worry about.

IMO, the line ratings on rods now a days are really not that important even when not using braid...

I go over and under the ratings on my rods all the time

But if your using a stiffer pole and go way under the rating like throwing 6lb line on a rod rated for 12-20lb it could break it easier. I would worry more about going under the rating

If you're new to this sport, maybe practice with a good mono, learn you're rod and reel... It will be a lot cheaper and less trouble than a braid or floro,

Yes you can typically go a bit above or a bit below line rating, easily more but I am erring on reason...

Braid usually is devide braid in half to get in at the rods rating... 50 / 25 ... 40/ 20 this is typical but is often exceeded still... Most froggers like braid... I don't but that's me...

I agree, if this is your first baitcaster or you aren't very comfortable with them, use 12-14lb mono to start.  I like Sufix Elite.   I use braid for frogs and fluoro for everything else.  It's a matter of preference though.

Yeah I know plenty of people who fish frogs on heavy fluro... I just prefer braid for the really thick stuff

I am new to the sport so I will probably just get a good mono as mentioned above. What are some good brands?

Sufix Elite is a little softer and handles very well.  So does Sunline Super Natural.  I am also a fan of Sufix Siege.  It also handles quite well on a baitcat reel.  There are an awful lot of good mono and copoly lines.  McCoy, Berkley, YoZuri, Izorline, P-Line, Maxima, Silver Thread and no doubt a few others I left out.  I wouldn't go lighter than 12# and would prefer 15# or heavier for frogs if I were going to go mono.

I like braid for frogs because of the cover I use them in....although I don't fish them often.  Otherwise I prefer mono.  However, braid will do the trick with spinnerbaits as well.  A good 40# braid should be sufficient for both techniques.  I like Sufix Performance for a low cost braid that is reasonably quiet and performs very well.  Much quieter than the older braid from PowerPro although it also is a good performing braid.  PowerPros's new braid is suppose to be much smoother...and thus quieter.  Sufix 832 is another excellent choice.  Daiwa Samurai is a very smooth and quiet braid that is smaller in diameter than a lot of braids for it rating because it breaks closer to its rating than a lot of other brands do.

Based on the 2 applications you are going to be throwing. I would recommend Yozuri hybrid, 15lb. It's very tough line and its economical. I think its still on sale at TW. Although I prefer braid for frogging, yozuri is a good line to start learning with. Once you become proficient at handling your reel, I would transition to braid. Good luck.. ;)
