Hey guys. So my dad really likes my Penn Fierce I have so i gave it to him for his birthday. I also love my fierce. So I need to get a new spinning reel. I have basically decided on a veritas for the rod. I really like the fierce as you know and i like the look of the Orra S and its also on sale for the same price the fierce is. So i need to decide between those two. Let me know any other reels that would possibly beat out either of these. Thanks guys

A Penn Fierce is a saltwater reel and a Abu garcia orra is a freshwater reel. Penn fierce is a metal reel and abu orra is a plastic reel. This is a easy decision if you tell me. Get the Penn.

If the intent is purely freshwater check out a president, double duty go for the fierce.

I second the Pfleuger President if you're using it for freshwater fishing.

I have two Penn Fierces and I love them both, but also use one of them as double duty for fresh and salt, and it works great as well. I'd get the Fierce if you planned to salt water fish as well.

I have the Orra it is a decent reel but I would get the feirce.

I'm not an Abu fan anymore. They seem to have gone cheap with parts or something and everyone is saying their newer reels aren't very good. I think of those two, the Penn is your best bet. If you want to look into another reel, check out the Pflueger President. I've never used one, but it gets nothing but great reviews.

The Abu Garcia Orra S has an alloy frame, it is not plastic. The components are also pretty corrosion resistant with stainless steel bearings, main shaft, and other components. It's a great reel and comes with a braid ready aluminum spool and a spare spool for mono, but you can tie mono to the aluminum spool. I use mine almost every time I go fishing. The Pflueger President, as mentioned, is also a great reel. Very smooth with 10 bearings but has a graphite body and rotor. You may see this as a negative but I do not. Of the two reels I prefer the Orra S.

I do not saltwater fish but if you plan to do mostly saltwater fishing then I would more than likely go with the reel that is made specifically for saltwater, the Penn. If fishing freshwater then the Abu Garcia Orra S has my vote. My opinion is probably a little biased as I use a ton of Abu Garcia gear, but I have had no quality issues and their support is top notch should you need it from what I have read. They are also quick to respond to the emails I sent them with product questions.

I read on another forum that somebody picked up a Penn Conquer for $100.  I saw this reel in Florida and it was built like a tank.  It came in different sizes and seemed to be set up for braid.  Having fished all kinds of reels, I was impressed with the quality of Penn's reels.

I have a Penn conquer 7000, the reel is a disappointment, had I read Alan Hawk's recommendation I may not have bought it.  I have seen others use them and they are quite pleased, in the store nothing was as smooth.  Good line capacity with 32# of drag on fairly light frame is seemed a good choice.  Over time it developed a geary feeling, still quite smooth, have had it serviced twice with no improvement.  I do need to send it into Penn.  For $100 in a 4000 size I'd try it.

I've had a abu garcia orra 2s30 for sometime now and love it. 99% of my fishing is freshwater, but earlier this year i camped out at flamingo in the everglades on a beach and caught several different species. Went home rinsed it off, and it still runs smooth as heck. been a abu fan for a year now but this reel made me a fan for life. No complaints whats so ever.
