Hey Guys,

So i've had a boat for 2 months now, and i've been fishing atleast once a week but try to go 2-3 times.  I usually have to fish in the evenings, when I go out, it's from 3-dark (730-8ish).  I've tried spinners, cranks, senkos, trick worms, top water, etc etc etc, and well, i'm striking out.  I haven't caught but 10 or so fish in all of my outings.  I'm going to start just hitting one lake at a time til I can learn it, but i'm not 100% sure what i'm looking for.  Here's my latest lake, who what when where would you guys fish and why?  A lot of the shallow coves have lilly pads, and i've got a couple hits using a live target frog, but i've failed to hook up.  no bites on worms or anything else.  I'm probly gonna hit the water around 3-4CST today, so ya'll help me out ;)

Thanks for your help,

Sounds like you have been fishing a lot of shallow water. I would start on that main and secondary point by the dam with DD cranks, FB jigs, and C-rig. If it works there, try it in similar areas.

During the summer look at this lake as if the bass are near the 8' to 10' break line and fish alone that area, should narrow things down for you.

Fished for about 5 hours yesterday.  Jigs, Deep Cranks, Worms, spinners, Ratl-Traps and.................nothin.  this is the 4th or 5th skunk at this lake.  I had to quit before prime time (7-dark) cause the weekenders hit the lake, and there were 15 boats running laps around the lake and i was dancing all over the place. I fished the deep spots by the dam for a couple hours, then went and hit a couple of the "coves" to no avail.

The fish are probably trolling around away from the bank in non pressured areas.  I would use a deeper running crank bait in the 8 to 15 foot area of the lake.  The fish also may be more active early in the morning.

If you had a fishfinder, I'd venture to fish the 8+ ft breaklines like the previous gents said..

but w/o one I'd hit the biggest most promising lilly pad cove with deepwater access .. with frogs but if yer having trouble with hookups I'd go with t-rig plastics along weedline edges and even punch a bit into it

I would try staying a little later if possible. That first hour before & after dark is my favorite time to throw topwater like buzzbaits,  jitterbugs & frogs. If you're getting short strikes on the frog you could try trimming the legs if you haven't already. As far as mid day fishing goes I would start by locating whatever submerged structure I could around those break lines and working my from deep to shallow throwing jigs, cranks & spinners to cover water.

Where you are getting bites on frogs, try a Zara Spook, Zara Puppy, Heddon Torpedo, or Smithwick Devil's Horse.  Work them along the edges of the pads, or in large holes in the pads.

It's summer and it's hot. Try to go deeper and fish structures with the drop shot or carolina rig. Work it slow. IMHO crankbaits and spinnerbaits have a little to much action for such a hot weather.

it's HOT round here.  I do have a FF. Lowrance Elite 5 HDi, it's pretty slick.  I try to fish transitions, structure, etc.  I'm thinking these lakes are just over fished.  oh well, i'll keep on poking around.

What type of baitfish does it have? If there are a lot of Bluegill, I would watch for the next spawn, bass will know when this happens and will eat heartily when it does. If the lake has shad, try to follow the schools and mimic their colors with spinnerbaits and cranks and see what happens. I know everyone says you have to fish deep in summer to catch fish but I'd bet there are also plenty of shallow fish there. As the sun goes down, try a black buzzbait with either a black or gold blade and a black trailer, especially in and around the lily pads.

Good luck and know that there are lots of guys wishing they could get to a 300 acre impoundment anytime they want. You are blessed to have the opportunity.

Is anybody catching?

I would be asking questions, I might not get an answer but I'd dang sure be asking!

One trick I use is I know every Pro, Guide, & good anglers where I fish. When I see their boat at the launch, café, store, or anywhere I stroll by looking at what's tied on their rods. If I see them on the water I will not go fish that area but I will know what type of structure they are on & what kind of cover. If I see how they are casting, retrieving, & setting hook I'll know pretty much what technique they are using.

Y'all need to put all the odds in you favor by doing your homework  ;)

In the summer I find myself hunting baitfish more than actually fishing.  If I find balls of bait fish I usually drop a jig spoon or drop shot into the baitfish with pretty good action.  like said before, dont go home as soon as it gets dark, stay for a few more hours, as the water cools the big girls come up to the shallows to feed.  Know where your thermocline is, and use the crankbaits at that depth, you might hit a suspending bass in the head.  Hit the docks and rip rap just before the sun sets with the top water lures.  Grass lines on points and watch for the schooling bass in the channels.
