Dillo Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 What types of fish do you chase and how. What is your preferred rod, reel, line, bait, type of spot( river lake, pond, ocean, stream, aquarium, beach, pier, etc.) and method (cast and wait, slow retrieve, fast retrieve, fly fishing, etc.) I'm just curious what other people like. kikstand454 Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I LOVE stalking redfish in backwaters with a topwater in my kayak. Their mouths are on the bottom of their face, so they have to try really hard to hit a topwater..... but they do it with a vengeance. Its like someone dropping a bowling ball into the water in front of you! And then.....once they're hooked... they fight like they're 4x bigger! Its just super exciting all around. Many times you will see huge 24" and bigger reds with their backs out of the water they're so shallow. BEST part? I use a 7'mh bass rod with a shimano curado and 15# yozuri hybrid. Favorite lure- bone zara spook one knocker. Quote

Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 25, 2014 Super User Posted July 25, 2014 Bass are my favorite but besides them I love bowfin. My favorite place to fish for them is in the swampy areas around here... Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 25, 2014 Super User Posted July 25, 2014 Be difficult to name just one. My everyday favorites are snook, they run on average 8# but this time of year 20#+ gets common. The most exciting fish of my daily fishing is barracuda, 40" is about average but 55" happens, a good fight but not a great one, but the strike is awesome. This has been my best cuda year ever. Big jacks and tarpon are in a class all by themselves. Fishing for bonefish and permit in the backcountry may be my favorite but I don't get to do it that often. Charters for larger fish are out for me, just don't care to do it anymore. Hour + fights are getting tougher at my age, but the big reason is I'm not fishing. The Capt. picks the bait, picks the area, picks the equipment and I sit back and have a bud till there is a strike. Running into dolphin out there and casting for them is some pretty good stuff. Super User everythingthatswims Posted July 26, 2014 Super User Posted July 26, 2014 Freshwater-Fishing for 15-20+" small stream browns in the dead of winter (ultralight spinning tackle, fly line will freeze your hands off if it doesn't stick to your guides and freeze up the reel first) when I stay with my grandparents in Abingdon for Christmas, I don't have many quality trout here in Central Va so I have learned to like bass as well haha Saltwater- Just let me fish for any mean salty critter and I'm happy! crazyjoeclemens Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I'm on a bass kick now, but I cut my teeth running the illinois river for catfish. My favorite fishing trips are likely to always be chasing em around in my beat up old Jon boat. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 28, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 28, 2014 My favorite other than bass are big flathead catfish. I have a custom made XXH 7' casting rod with a Penn 309 and 130lb PP braid I like to lob big green sunfish right up next to snags with. When a fish eats you have to dig in and do everything you can to move them away from the snag, and sometimes that's not enough. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 28, 2014 Super User Posted July 28, 2014 Striper and Blues in the bay Kennebunkport, ME using a Tube, Jig or Trap type lure or at night when I'm fishing with my neighbor, we'll use clams or sea worms. Super User Felix77 Posted July 28, 2014 Super User Posted July 28, 2014 Smallmouth on anything finesse. Currently a Mojo Rig, Drop Shot, Weightless senko, Wacky Rig, finesse swim bait. So much fun! Quote
TingTingEightSix Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Bass are by far my favorite but im terrible at strictly bass fishing. Usually I go catfish or crappie/bluegill fishing on the river bank with either night crawlers or minnows for the crappie and bluegill, chicken liver for catfish on the bottom. There have been several times qhen ive been fishing for crappie and bluegill that I have run into a bass or two. For the most part the bass were small fry, not reaching 12 inches, but the last bass I caught I think did exceed 12 inches. I used to eat a lot of crappie ans bluegill, but now im catch and release 9/10 times. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Walleye are my favorite, live bait on finesse rig's, spinning gear with MF to LF rods and 1000 to 2500 size reels jigs with bucktails, plastics and sometimes tipped with minnows . Smallmouth is probably what I fish for more than Walleye, but that is only when the freezer is full. I like using grub's and jigs and usually fish the same outfits for both. If I am using cranks for either, it's done with a medium Fast or Moderate action casting rod's. I fish for everything from Salmon to Blugills and love it all, but the Walleye and Smallmouth are my favorite. Quote
