It is a reel that is worth more than it's retail price, IMO so spend now and be happy!

I just went threw this myself. I was trying to decide between a Lews Speed Reel, the one that is $99.99 with a $20.00 dollar rebate ($79.99) or a Curado I series.

After hemming and hawing for a few days I decided on the Shimano Curado 200I as my first bait caster and the thing is QUALITY. I just picked it up last night and I've already had it out. Took it out for a couple hours after work and I literally got casting down in 15 minutes or so. Still learning but the not getting backlash curve wasn't bad at all. I tried my friends Lews recently and no matter what I did, I just couldn't keep it from getting backlash about 1 out of 3 casts.

I wasn't looking for a $180.00 dollar reel when I started out. In fact I had already bought my Shakespeare Ugly Stick GX2 for $30.00 at Wal-Mart and expected I would spend no more than $80~100.00 on a reel. Now I've got this beautiful Curado I series and I'm looking for a better rod to go with it!

Oh and have you seen all the knobs? I really want to replace a few of the items like a carbon fiber crank, aluminum spool, drag etc with some red anodized billet parts. Oh and some cork knobs! I love the look of cork knobs!

Spend the money, and you won't have to spend it twice.

Not that the Lews is a bad reel, but if you're anything like me, the minute you get the Lews you're going to be wondering how much nicer the Shimano would have been. I bought a lot of good gear only to turn around and sell it for better gear. Just my 2 cents.

Glad you like you're shimano, just wait , it gets better, hawgtech handles are awesome.. They have several options available including cork knobs..... I have only one now, but am hopeful on at least 2 more... They are a amazing carbon fiber handle... I am sure you would like it! I do!!

I got the SS1 as my first baitcaster, but I wish I would've gone with a better reel like the Curado. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. If you buy the SS1 like I did, you'll want an upgrade after a couple months.

Buy once, cry once.

I was once like you, with a limited budget. I'd try to stretch a dollar every direction possible, to get the most out of it. Some things you can cut corners on, others you can't. NEVER cut corners on your foundation, and your rod and reel are part of your foundation. Another place you should never cut corners on are shoes, tires, and mattresses (things between you and the ground).

Sound advice.

I've spent more time selling fishing equipment to buy upgrades than I care to mention. Hard for to pass up good sales and I end up with things I don't want. I no longer compromise. If I have to quit playing golf for a couple months to save a few coins, or whatever, I always go for what I really want instead of settling; because I'll end up getting the first thing eventually anyways.

The great thing about a situation like this is that you will see what the difference is and appreciate a better reel more after you've started out with a lesser one.
