Maselyk Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I am wondering if X-Raps are all they're made out to be. I know that some fisherman in my local tournament have been talking them up the last few years, but at $8-$11 each, I'm not too sure about trying one! I'm mostly fishing 10-16 feet of somewhat stained water! Are X-Raps a yes or a no, and if yes, which siza and colors do you suggest?! Thanks! Quote
Uber Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I started using x-raps a few years back and they produce. Being on the upper niagara river and in Lake Erie, the smallies go nuts for these. Try the XR06 or XR-08 sizes, I fish in about 3-12 ft. of water with these and run them just over the weeds. Reeling and stopping for a few seconds as it is suspending, then jerking, or start reeling again and wam. I hit them almost every time I use them. My top colors are hot pink, a purple/silver, and green muddler. The newest color that I have been using is hot mustard muddler. I usually use spinnerbaits up here but if it's slow I throw that hot mustard x-rap on and they can't seem to resist. Edit: they are a bit overpriced, I was hesitant to buy them at first but I have been lucky to have only lost 1-2 in the past years. Quote
Cgrinder Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I think they are just a little overpriced. They catch fish for me. Try the Shallow Shad X-rap in firetiger or perch if bluegill are around. 1 Quote
gobig Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I really like the xraps. I would venture to say that it was my most productive rip bait I threw all this last year. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 24, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 They aren't my favorite but they certainly have their place. They tend to be more effective in a little warmer water than other suspending jerkbaits because of their aggressive slashing action. I like the olive minnow color. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 I use X-Raps year round up here in the northeast. You just need to "pick up the pace" in warmer water months, like now. Overpriced? I don't really think so. Look at it this way, unless you are fishing pike waters, the chances are that your single X-Rap will serve you for many, many seasons. And if you think that $10.00 is high for any lure, how about the Japanese versions, going for a high as $25.00 each! I have about a half dozen LC Pointers, as well as a bit more of X-Raps. Both are productive lures. Both cost money. But they last a lifetime. Just make sure you get one of the "Hot Head" colors! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 I use suspending jerkbaits in cold water and floating jerkbaits in warm water but the X-Rap is different, I'll use it during the summer in certain situations because it has an aggressive action. They are very versatile in that you can fish them slow in cold water, so you can use them year round but it is hard when you get to that point that the waterwarming to the point you need to move the bait a little faster but it still isn't warm enough for a full on aggressive X-Rap slashing retrieve, like 55 degree water, it is hard to move the X-rap fast enough without being too aggressive. X-Raps are good and are well worth their price point but you can find them cheaper. Quote

Mr. BattleArmor Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Love Xraps. Definitely worth the money, very durable as well. 1 Quote
frogflogger Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 If you can only afford one jerk/minnow bait this is the one. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 I like them, but I prefer the Rapala BX Minnow's instead. But they're in that same ~$9-10 range as well. Quote
NDH Fishing Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I sorta like X-Raps, the first time I used one I caught a few bass, all about 2 lbs, but I do think that they are very overpriced. I think that the only reason some people talk em up so much is because the X-rap is a very attractive lure. It has nice eyes, its very reflective, and it has a nice body shape, but I dont think the bass love quite as much as our eyes do. I have only had okay luck with it, and I have had far better luck with lures cheaper than it. If I where you I would buy 1 and try it, because everyone has there own personal way of retrieving a lure, and so you got find that lure that works with YOUR retrieving style, and who knows the X-Rap could be the lure for you. But it still has to be right for the lakes/canals you fish or it will never work as good as it can. Quote
NDH Fishing Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I forgot to say that i have broken a few of the lips on my lures, this has never happened with an X-Rap. They are tough lures. Quote
RossCo91 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The suspending Jerk bait Xrap has to be one of my favourite lures to cover water with. Quote
dam0007 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Thoughout the spawning season I have good luck with them. Quote
Primus Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 They aren't my favorite but they certainly have their place. They tend to be more effective in a little warmer water than other suspending jerkbaits because of their aggressive slashing action. I like the olive minnow color. x2 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 I am a big fan of them and have caught fish year round with them. My favorite color is clown for the most part but have done well with the minnow colored ones as well. I also like the deep running versions. One thing i will say is that they do not suspend great in warmer water so i usually change out the hooks to a size larger or to a 2 or 3x just to get a little extra weight to help them suspend. Quote
frogflogger Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I've used them in saltwater, in fresh water from the everglades, the big O to the Ohio r. - caught fish everywhere I've thrown them - I have them from small to large, deep to shallow - they are durable and effective. I've caught catfish, lm, sm, spots, musky, walleye, jack crevalle, snook, tarpon, peacocks, oscars, clown fish - I could go on and on about them, they flat catch fish. A better deal price wise than many many other lures out there. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 Hell yes they work. One of the very best jerkbaits out there for all bass, not to mention walleye, pike, trout and crappie. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 For the me they have been hit or miss. Sometimes they are awesome and other times I'll catch nothing on them. Quote
