Weld's Largemouth Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Today an amazing idea has sparked in my brain and it will be beneficial to all anglers, experienced and new. In this thread i will keep count of how many fish have been caught on each type of lure (spinnerbait, worm, topwater frog, etc.) I will post the lure categories below and the count next to them. Whenever you catch a fish on one of these types of lures post here how many fish you caught and what lure category. (no past fish please) If the fish is heavier than the current record fish for that lure catergory, please include the weight (lbs, oz) and length (inches) so i can update it as the record for that lure catergory If i am missing a category please quote me and let me know. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ spinnerbait 15 fish; Record : 4lbs, 3oz. 21.5 inches [Weld's Largemouth] worm soft plastic 6 fish; Record : 3lbs, 12oz. 19 inches [Weld's Largemouth] jerkbait 3 fish; Record : 2lbs, 12oz. 17 inches [uber] creature bait soft plastic 2 fish; Record : 2lbs, 14oz. 18.5 inches [Weld's Largemouth] topwater frog 1 fish; Record : 1lbs, 8oz. 15 inches [Weld's Largemouth] topwater popper 1 fish; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches spinner 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches topwater walk-the-dog 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches topwater mouse 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches lipless crankbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches square bill crankbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches deep diving crankbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches prop bait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches spy bait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches medium sized rigged swimbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches large rigged swimbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches football jig 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches swim jig 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches grub/tube soft plastic 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches finesse jig 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches finesse worm 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches chatterbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches wakebait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches buzzbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches soft plastic swimbait 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches spoon 0; Record : 0lbs, 0oz. 0 inches Total fish: 28 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 24, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Not a chance I'm keeping track of every fish I catch, just don't have the patience to do it. I did fish for about 30 minutes a couple days ago and caught 4, 2 biggest were both in the 2lb range, one on a wacky rigged Senko, the other on the smallest size Pop R. Last time I kept track of the number of fish I caught was 2 years ago. I ended the year with nearly 3,000 bass caught. It was enough just to keep track of numbers, no way I could get myself to weigh, measure, and record what I caught every fish on Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 Not a chance I'm keeping track of every fish I catch, just don't have the patience to do it. Seriously. I don't even weigh or measure my fish, if I got the hook out fast I'll take a pic sometimes but my first priority is to return them to the water asap. It's just fishing. Making a science out of it is just too much like work, even for my inner enginerd. 1 Quote

I record them in excel and I have a big list and I can see patterns of what lure, conditions or time of year is most productive Quote

Making a science out of it is just too much like work, even for my inner enginerd. It doesn't take long to measure and weigh, its an extra 20 or 15 seconds. The hook isnt hard to get out, doesnt take long unless you let the bass choke it in his throat Quote

Super User K_Mac Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 Like others I do not have the discipline or patience to measure and weigh most fish. The bait that catches the most fish is the one you get in front of the most fish. As simple as that sounds, I believe it to be absolutely true. This year my go-to bait is a t-rigged smallie beaver pitched to grass. Last year it was a chatterbait. The year before it was a wacky rigged Senko/knock-off. The year before...maybe a jig. The key is finding fish. What is far less important than where. 3 Quote
OroBass Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 This would be difficult due to the uncontrolled variables of your experiment. How many cast, date and time and structure all would change the effectiveness of each lure. This is why there is no number 1 lure. One day, at a certain time, in a specific cover any lure can be the ticket. The op has a great idea but the accuracy of the experiment would require extremely thorough record keeping to control the many test variables. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 In the topwater frog category it says 11.5lbs- 15". Must have been a fatty! Quote

The key is finding fish. What is far less important than where. For me it isn't discipline it's the lack of desire. The time it takes to measure, weigh, record and photograph a small fish I could be making a cast that may yield something special. I have marks on my rods @ 20" and 25", that gives me a good estimate. I would say my most prolific bass bait is a senko, but my least used. Other lures are more exciting, more fun and more challenging for me. 1 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 25, 2014 Super User Posted July 25, 2014 SirSnook I will edit my earlier post by saying I am also talking about good quality fish. I could catch more fish at times on other baits. Most of the time I am not really interested in catching a lot of small fish unless one of the grandkids is along. A small t-rigged worm, a light jig and 2-3" grub, or a 4-5" wacky Senko would probably be my choice if just catching any bass was the mission. Quote
