Super User tcbass Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 I use a snap swivel on all of my rods because I change baits often. I have 2 main baitcasters and 2 main spinning rods. I normally only have the 2 baitcasters and one spinning rod out. I don't use any type of leader for my rods and run straight braid (Power Pro, but ordered some Sufix 832 to try this year). Because I use snap swivels it makes it almost impossible to clip onto buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. So what I do is take about a 6" inch piece of braid and tie it to the lure with a non-slip loop knot at the end. That way I can clip the snap swivel onto the "leader" via the loop and the lure will run correctly. I cut and retie new leader onto the lures every couple of years. So far I have only lost one fish this way and it was because the snap opened up (I should have known as it was a snap that was older and was not staying closed very well). It was about a 1.5lbs bass. Does anyone else tie on a separate leader to their lure and leave the leader attached to the lure and not the line? Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 I'm going to say no, no one else does this. 1 Quote
EmersonFish Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 This is a new one to me, but if you absolutely insist on using snap swivels, it seems like a fine idea. I know you could take a small piece of tubing and put it right behind the bend which would keep the swivel from sliding down the wire. It might not last as long as your method, but it's simpler. With a bait like a buzzbait or spinnerbait, you don't have to worry about sensitivity doing it your way, so no reason to mess with it. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 Definitely never heard of this before. If you're using a snap swivel, you should be able to hook one to a spinnerbait or buzzbait without any trouble at all. To solve the issue of it sliding down from the hairpin, take some pliers and pinch it down so it closes the opening in the hairpin. 1 Quote
CDobber Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I pinch the buzzbait down as well for my snap swivels, and know every few casts I'll likely have to re-position, still a lot faster than the alternative. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 23, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 23, 2014 If it works for you the way you want it too...Then why not?? But to answer your question, no I don't and don't know of anyone else who rigs that way. Mike Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 I have been doing it for years on my deep vertical baits that I fish in the late fall and winter. I can change them a lot easier in the cold weather and I use a fluro leader which attaches to braid. I keep a dozen or so rigged up that way all the time though I don't use a loop. I use a split ring and hook it to a good quality snap. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 This is a new one for me. When fishing spinnerbaits using a leader for Pike I do something a little different. I use medical tubing and slip it over the front where you would tie it. That way it keeps the snap in place. 1 Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 You can buy air hose for fish tanks at a pet store and use it the same way. 2 Quote

bassin is addicting Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 i use duo-lock snaps on a couple of my setups. as a co-angler i need to be able to switch a lot and quickly depending on what the boater decides to do. and i do what Felix does... i use lawn mower gas line tubing....get it at the hardware store.. just clip a small piece off and you are good to go. i have all my spinnerbaits pre-rigged like this it keeps the snap from slipping down the wire on spinnerbaits Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 You can take shrink tubing cut to size & close off the line tie on non twisted spinnerbaits & buzz baits. Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 I just bought the smallest they had but you could always take a spinnerbait with you. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 the lawn mower gas line i use is yellow...no idea of exact "size"...there was clear and yellow. the clear was a little bigger than the yellow. the yellow was recommended by Sam on here. you can buy it very cheap at a hardware store to see if it is the size you like. Super User Felix77 Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 Where do you get the medical tubing? Medical supply stores. If you look in Home Depot, Lowes they sell tubing there as well that should work. What size is that? Tubing? It's the smallest they sell. Not sure what size. If you are talking about the spinnerbait (which I doubt) it's a 1/2 oz. Megastrike Strikeback spinnerbait. Quote
shanksmare Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 About 15 years ago I met a fellow while fly fishing for stripers on the Brewster Flats on Cape Cod. Thats exactly what he did. He had a couple dozen flies all with leaders attached. He had a short (1') leader on the end of his fly line with a large loop on the end. Each fly with leader attached had a short (1') leader on it also with a large loop on the end. He explained that his near vision was very poor but he could attach and remove flies with the loops by feel. It certainly worked for him considering his success that day. When the tide flooded it brought in sand eels followed by hungry 5 to 20 lb bass. The fishing was so good that we almost had to swim to shore since we dallied too long and were a mile from the shore. Thanks for the ideas.....even with bending the wires together some, my white buzz just wouldn't stay in place today. Just cut up some air hose and will give it a try next time out....on many of my spinners/buzzbaits, it wasn't a snug fit, so I cut up extra expecting that they will fall off inevitably. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 I use a very thin tieable wire leader that I tie to suspending jerkbaits and tie a very small split ring to the other end when fishing in pike infested waters. I found that the small wire causes the baits to sink slowly, but not as fast as regular steel wire leaders. I also use snaps sometimes, but never a swivel. Quote
