Super User FishTank Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 I can remember having the first Daiwa minicast. It was high tech to me. It was gold and it had a cool factor to it. If you want to take a walk down memory lane, check this guy out...... http://www.ricksrods.com/index.asp 1 Quote
jtesch Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Remember when In Fisherman was one of the only fishing shows on tv and a weekly must see and Ron Lindner and Babe Winkelman didn't look like the same person Quote
thehooligan Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Remember when.... All you had was one of these, a handful of lures. old fiberglass rod, mitchell 308, 8lb mono, and thats all you needed.... [ 1 Quote

Super User Goose52 Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 Remember when the only Rapalas in the tackle store were the original floaters? Yes! Most (all) of these are 60's vintage and when you said "Rapala" back then, this is what you thought of... 2 Quote

Except my box was made of metal, was much smaller, had one tray, and had a 12" ruler stamped in the lid. Solid-glass rod, check on the 8lb mono, and instead of a Mitchell reel it was a Ted Williams 400. Oh wait, I still have that combo (with 8lb mono)...but not the tackle box... Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 ...remember when plastic worms were comprised almost solely of pre-rigged creme worms or Manns Jelly worms? I still get a euphoric buzz when I take in the intoxicating aroma of a jelly worm. : ) Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 23, 2014 Super User Posted July 23, 2014 I remember when I didn't fish weeds because I didn't know about worm hooks and bullet sinkers. Thankfully a nice guy hooked me up when I was around 12. 3 Quote

Thankfully a nice guy hooked me up when I was around 12. When I think about all the prime water I didn't fish because of heavy weeds back in the day, I get a little sick. I think the only option I used was a Johnson silver minnow, big hits but hook-up ratio not great Quote

Thankfully a nice guy hooked me up when I was around 12. Yes! In the 60's neither my Dad or I knew anything like t-rigging (was it invented yet?). When we wanted to go weedless, we used the hooks with the weedguard, when we wanted to add weight, we used the weedguard w/weight hooks. And this was in South Florida...where there tends to be a lot of weeds... Quote
thehooligan Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Still got it, mitchell 308 and a berkley rod. Dad won it in a miniature golf tourny back in the 60's. Id fish it for fun if there wasnt a hairline crack by the hook keeper.... 1 Quote

edfitzvb Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Floating Rapalas are still a go-to bait for me when the fishing is tough. Pull out a spinning setup with a silver and black F-11 and twitch until a bass picks on it. But I quickly moved into multi-drawer tackle boxes back then. Had a Plano 7 drawer hip roof tackle box that I spent all my money filling to overflowing. 2 Quote
jtesch Posted July 24, 2014 Author Posted July 24, 2014 Remember when We looked at the new import Daiwa and Shimano equipment and thought the tackle industry is going to hell with all this Japanese crap. The Daiwa TD1and TD2 were totally bad ass We thought you couldn't catch Musky's at certain times because they had sore mouths We fished for those Muskys with 5'6" broomsticks and Abu or Daiwa round reels with no Brakes, resulting in some epic backlashes. Quote
jtesch Posted July 24, 2014 Author Posted July 24, 2014 A couple more Remember when We northern fishermen always carried a musky club or small gaff so if we hooked something big and toothy we could kill it If you told anyone it was easier to catch a 30 pound bag of smallies than a 30 pound bag of largies they would think you completely insane Quote
jtesch Posted July 24, 2014 Author Posted July 24, 2014 Last one Remember when it was cool to put big stickers of fish on your boat or truck. I had a bass and a pike. Vomit Quote

mod479 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Remember when Bassmasters was not an infomercial and 3/4 inane zona/mercer commentary. Also miss hearing: "And now its time for the pros pointers." Fishing shows aint what they used to be. Much better content on youtube these days. Although I do like Major League fishing format, watching the reactions to some of those guys hearing KVD got another one was funny. Remember Bob Cobb? Remember when a pro would hook and land a 4lber on TV, promptly put in the livewell, and get back to fishing? Not hoot and holler, break the fishes jaw, and bouce a 1k dollar setup off the deck of the boat? Remember when a 3lb smallie from the st.lawrence river/great lakes was big, a 4lber was a trophy? These days.... 3lber? Haha....dink, wont even cull. Pepperidge farm remembers. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 Many guys remember when Toledo Bend had standing timber, I remember when that timber still had green leaves on em! Quote
jtesch Posted July 24, 2014 Author Posted July 24, 2014 (Goes out and peels off sticker) Yeah stickers are dumb! Stickers are ok, just have to be like "Team Daiwa" or "Bass Resource" although my wife said they looked stupid on the boat. She's now banned 1 Quote
DTack Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 My biggest memory is "remember when" they had the 1998 Bassmasters Classic televised and you got to watch Denny Brauer and George Cochran go back and forth for the win? That made me want to bass fish about as bad as anything. Remember when the dropshot was the "always lucky" rig in translation? Remember when flippin' sticks didn't have triggers? Remember when braided line was coming out and you didn't have to say "I wish I could get a fish out of there" anymore? Remember when 7' rods were LONG? 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 24, 2014 Super User Posted July 24, 2014 Remember whenever "Fireline" came out and it was the greatest thing ever? Remember whenever all baitcasting reels were round? Quote

Although I give Iaconelli a pass since he seems kind of crazy anyway! I remember Bob Cobb and they don't make 'em like him anymore. The fishing shows that I put at the top of my list are shows where the host doesn't feel like he has to put on an act for the camera and act all crazy and CONSTANTLY is hyping his gear, his clothes, his tackle, his, his, his, etc, etc, etc. A few of my favorites are Lunkerville, Mike D does a nice job on this show; Joe Bucher Outdoors, very well done; Jarrett Edwards Outdoors, He has a lot of info about products on his show but it's done well; and even though I don't saltwater fish, I really like George Poveromo's show. Anyhow, I digress... Quote
jtesch Posted July 24, 2014 Author Posted July 24, 2014 Remember the awesome coveralls and flat brimed, mesh back caps the early pros wore. Honestly can anyone say they looked good. Goober---Gomer Quote
