LakeNormanFishing Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I am a fairly new to bass fishing and am looking for some advice. I love to fish but really only have access to my local lake (Lake Norman, NC) from the bank in public fishing spots. I'm not very tall (about 5'6) and am trying to figure out what rod and reel setup to get. The areas where i fish are not very deep maybe 15ft max and have rocky bottoms. I'm fishing for large mouth and want to get something good all-around. Preferably spinning and less than 100$. Any tips? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 21, 2014 Super User Posted July 21, 2014 Pflueger Trion $40 Berkley Lightning or Lightning Shock (I like my Lightnings) About $40-$50 or for less a Berkley Amp or Cherrywood. Quote
LakeNormanFishing Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 If i want to throw spinnerbaits do I need a high gear ratio reel? Quote
Super User Marty Posted July 21, 2014 Super User Posted July 21, 2014 If i want to throw spinnerbaits do I need a high gear ratio reel? No. Spinnerbaits can be fished at various speeds and you can adjust your cranking rate to achieve the desired speed. 2 Quote
VegasFishing Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I'm 5'6" and bank fish my local pond a lot. 6'6" fenwick eagle m/f rod with a shimano sedona 2500 reel is a nice inexpensive combo... 1 Quote

This would be a good rig. I'm fishing a lot from the bank too, and 7ft is about the longest rod I would want since I'm often casting with trees and bushes very near or behind me. The Shimano is also a pretty good bet. I have a Sahara and even though these reels can all be had under $80, they're very smooth and withstand my seemingly constant abuse. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 22, 2014 Super User Posted July 22, 2014 Anything 6'6-7' would be fine. My friend fishes Norman and has caught some nice fish out of there. Quote
Christian M Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I fished off the bank for a LONG time before I got my first boat, and I caught my some of my best fish doing so. I would usually fish with a casting setup. I would go out with a 7' MHM rod and a 7.0:1 reel spooled up with 10lb powerpro. When I brought a spinning setup I would go with a 7'1" MF with a 6.4:1 reel spooled up with 8lb flouro. Quote
jtharris3 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I've come to like a 6'-6" rod when fishing from shore. I have a couple of Lightning Rod Shocks and they're a good rod. Quote
wngan9447 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 For a good setup, I'd see if you can get the crucial deal from DSG and a sienna reel. The rod is going to be more important for the feel right now. I've pulled in 5-6 lbs bass with no issues on that reel. Quote
einscodek Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 7'6" flipping stick (preferably telescopic) casts a mile and has the backbone to pull out of weeds. Put whatever reel u want on it dont matter 20-30lb braid with fluoro leader covers alot of bases Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 22, 2014 Super User Posted July 22, 2014 Your height shouldn't determine the length of the rod you use. For bank fishing, I like to carry one baitcaster, and one spinning setup with me. If the lake/pond your're fishing has a lot of trees/brush around the banks that you have to watch for when casting, sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a shorter rod with you (5'6"-6'). If it's pretty wide open and you don't have to worry about the tip hitting a tree branch on your casts, then don't be afraid to get something 6'6"-7'. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 7'6" flipping stick (preferably telescopic) casts a mile and has the backbone to pull out of weeds. Put whatever reel u want on it dont matter 20-30lb braid with fluoro leader covers alot of bases imo that rod is way too long for him...especially for bank fishing. i also wouldn't recommend a flippin stick. i use M or MH and fish from the bank 75% of the time with no issues. but to each his own i guess. i'd recommend for your height 6'6"...7' max. the 6'6" does allow for easier casting if in tight places. MH will allow for various presentations with no issue. Quote
LakeNormanFishing Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 Alright, Thanks for the tips guys! I've only ever used spinning gear so i'm probably gonna stick with it until I learn what works and get used to my lake. I've decided on 6'6 Medium fast rod and a nice pfleuger trion reel from basspro shops. I was able to the combo for around $90 and cant wait to hit the water. Thanks again, I definitely know where to ask for any fishing help from now on! And how do I mark my topic as solved? (if that's possible) Quote
