lokus Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Hey everyone. I'm getting back into bass fishing after having not fished for about 20 years. The last time I was fishing was when I was 12. I was excited to get back into bass fishing and also to try Lake Galena. It was either Galena or Nockamixon and I decided to go for Galena due to it being located closer to my home. I went into this fishing trip knowing the odds were probably against me since I would be fishing from the bank during the summer. I don't own a boat so I knew I'd have to put some extra leg work into finding an ok spot. After having bought all my starting tackle this past week, I headed out to Galena this morning. I arrived at around 5:45am and left around 11:00am. My initial approach was to scope out around the bridge towards the east end of the lake (near Chapman Rd) and soon found out that you aren't able to fish there due to it being a wildlife preserve or something of that nature. I was slightly disappointed because it appeared to have beautiful banks and plenty of trees/growth in the water that would be prime real estate for bass. I really didn't want to push my luck and potentially get a fine. Oh well. I walked the bank and decided on a starting location. I started fishing using a buzz bait to fish the top water. I also tried a spinner bait and a texas rigged green pumpkin senko. Nothing. About a half hour in a friendly fisherman walking by told me that I was fishing in a restricted area and didn't want to see me get caught or fined. I wasn't aware that I was still in a restricted area. I was appreciative and packed up. What I didn't know when fishing Galena is that there are multiple buoys in the water when heading towards the bridge that designate where you can start fishing and I presume stop boating so that you don't travel towards the restricted wildlife area. After packing up I walked further down the path to a bank location that wasn't restricted. After attempting to fish the buzzbait and spinner bait I decided to try the texas rigged green pumpkin senko again. I caught 2 LM bass. Nothing to write home about but I was happy to at least catch something on my first trip. I didn't measure the first but the second was 11.5 inches. I caught them within 10 minutes of each other when casting near the same location and at first I thought they were the same fish. I wasn't able to reel in any other fish at that location. I tried other locations but came up empty as well. I left happy that day that I at least caught something. I was really rusty for my first time out. I lost a few senkos, snagged a line, got my line tangled and had fun restringing a palomar knot. All in all it was a worthwhile trip and I learned more than I knew before I went to the lake. I did find it challenging in differentiating between a bite and my senko bouncing off the rocks at the bottom of the lake. I can admit that my hook setting skills need some work. For my next trip to Galena I think I may try the New Galena Rd side of the lake. Sorry for rambling but I enjoyed my trip and wanted to share it with everyone. Thanks! 2 Quote

Dogmatic Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Wow, just joined this forum, because my old forum git outta hand and everyone left, my local forum 24/7, sux this time of year because everyone goes to the ice fishing site, but I'm surprised to see some real locals on here. I live in Perkasie, grew up in D-town, and just returned here after some time in CO. Very familiar with all the water around here, big water I fish the Nock mostly and the river, I would fish Galena, but that closed area really gets me p.o.'ed, but 90% of the time I fish small private ponds. I take my kayak over there when i can and fish the docks at lunch (work 3 minutes for it). I really want to hit nock a lot this year. i was there three times last year and did ok. I mostly fish small streams for small mouth. love skinny water! If any of you guys want to meet and up fish anywhere i'm down! Quote

Only time I fish the Perkiomen is w/my fly rod & with my girls picking off stocker trout. Have never caught or even seen a "decent" bass on the creek. Quote

Have never caught or even seen a "decent" bass on the creek. Biggest bass of got out of the perk was a 4lb LM. If you find the spillways along the stream you will find the big bass (my photo is from the perk in Sellersville) . Normally the bass i get are around 1-2lb in the skinny water. Trust me they are in there! . I'm glad to here of someone else that fish for bass with a fly rod! 70% of the time i have my 4wt in hand. 1 Quote

Yeah really hahah for fish that big ill bring the 6wt. I do a lot of dead drifting pt's so the 4wt makes it a lot easier. let me know this summer guys and we can hit east branch! Quote

I will fill in whats needed on the water. Yes, finding an actual topo lake map pretty much impossible(unless you do what you're doing, and create one). Have you ever tried the park office, sometimes they have a topo lake map(up on a wall) for their own reference? Good luck. Quote

I have not talked to anyone at the park last year but I have not seen anything at the ramps or around the boat rental. Ill have to look into it more once they open back up. Quote
chrisdm4 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Walked the park this weekend. Around 70% is still ice but there was a boat on the water. the big deal was the seagulls where diving after the shad or white perch! They were putting on quite the show. it was defiantly neat to see. Good thing about that is the bass should be moving up with the shad and perch. I took water temp on the south side (38 degrees) and north side (43 degrees). Things should really pick up in the next couple weeks there. Also read that it was an old lead mine so that's why there is not much cover on the bottom like trees and what not. I'am getting a DI for my kayak so we will see what i come up with once i get on the water this year. wont be long now!! Quote

Dogmatic Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Galena mining, thus the name "Lake Galena". Galena is a lead ore, and mining in the area was pretty much done by the turn of the last century. All the structures(the few houses and out buildings), and a few trees were removed prior to construction in the early '70's. There's some old road beds, rocks, stumps, but not much else. Quote
