Just wondering Triton_Mike, but whats that extension on the rod near the reel? I have seen a few of these on other rods and wondering what it does and all.

I finally finished this spinning rod. It is a St Croix 6' 3" MXF . This balanced very nicely. I feels good in my hand. I need to get out and fish it!!

justtrying,  George Roth can most certainly and does make this type of design on a spinning rod.  He actually put the idea in my head for this design.  He had a rod designed similiar to the rod I have there but he had a bit longer hand grip and I just put a button of cork on both ends thinking that hand grip serves no purpose on a spinnin rod anyway.  

I don't know what extension your referring to whomever asked that question???  Can you be more specific??

A little bird told me that an up and coming commercial company might be offering a rod similiar to the design you see above .  It's not carved in stone but it might

Oh..isn't that the balance thing that some companies offer on their rods?, it's like the extention for balancing purposes?

It's just a 3-4 ring tapered butt grip, with a rubberized cork cap, that's it nothing more. The rod is built with the seat placed at a certain point on the blank for Mike's preferred balance point with that reel size on it.

nice rods everyone! ronnie, what kind of fighting butt cap is that? i am new and dont know how to do a rod like your 2nd pic. if you could help me out on that because i am going to start a spinning reel soon and want one of those on mine. thanks

The rod in the second pic became another rod all together, those were just pieces of cork I had laying around and I pieced them together for the picture. That particular butt cap was a longer handle that I cut off and was going to sand it up real nice on the lathe. You can buy ready made butt caps that are real nice from several sponsors on this board, if you don't have a lathe to turn em yourself. You can download the "Mud Hole" catalog from their website as a pdf and shop on line. I do a lot of buisness with them. I actually replaced all the cork on that rod (G-loomis Slate IMX) with eva foam with a pre-made foam butt cap and I really like the way it turned out. It's hard to get a picture right now, as it's turning on the dryer. I will post a picture on this thread when I am finished in a day or two. I hope this is helpfull.

ok, thanks. when you put the pieces of cork on do you just epoxy them? i have seen in Mudhole the butt caps, but the are screw in. can you get them wo you can put them on without a screw in? i really like the design and am going to try it when i get the materials. thanks

As promised, a few pics of the finished "Slate" split grip with foam. I am pleased with how it turned out. I'll let it cure for a few days, but I can't  wait to fish with it.

nice rod! those butt caps done screw in do they? all the ones on Mudhole screw in. do you just hollow it out for the blank then epoxy it in? nice rod, keep em' coming.

Foam is especially easy to fit if you buy the right size, relative to your blank.

hey, cool looking outfit. that 'ol stella stuck on the handle ain't so shabby either. they really make a nice match.

..i haven't tried any foam yet - still having enough trouble w/cork! LOL ...i am turning some wood for a few special rods, however. ,,,man, this rod building Kills your fishing time.
