Yet again, it'll give new users as well as some of the old vets a way to learn and 'teach' through their opinions

The second installment will be on CRANKBAITS and your thoughts.

Questions to Consider:

What is your favorite crankbait? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?)

Under what circumstances will you throw any type of crankbait?

How do you determine what color crankbait to use? What factors tie in for you?

How do you set the hook when you know you've got a fish on?

Are there any crankbaits that you've tried that you do NOT suggest?

What techniques do you use for your selected crank?

Name a good squarebill and in what situations to throw it!

NOTE: QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER ARE QUESTIONS YOU CAN USE IN YOUR ANSWER TO SHED LIGHT AND MORE DETAIL TO YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T VERY "KNOWLEDGEABLE" ON THE SPECIFIC TOPIC.

NOTE: After all the topics are covered, I'll take a vote and see if any of the same lures were mentioned more than once and we'll get a community consensus. Could be interesting to see!

What is your favorite crankbait? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?)

I have two.

Spro Fat John, 11$, BTD, Cellmate

Zoom WEC E1, I think retail is 20$, I practically stole a dozen of these from a seller for the price he sold them at, Bone Shad/Bull Bream

The LC 1.5 is up there but the Spro Fat John has taken that over for me.

Under what circumstances will you throw any type of crankbait?

Ice out to Ice over, the cranks are thrown.... be it shad raps, flat sided mid divers or balsa flat sided squarebills for prespawners

How do you determine what color crankbait to use? What factors tie in for you?

Water clarity and/or cloud cover. Action of the bait(wobble/hunting action)is more important, personally, than color. I keep color selection simple and it's yet to fail.

How do you set the hook when you know you've got a fish on?

If I have a fish on, odds are i've already set the hook. The hookset really depends. In general, a sweeping hookset is traditionally accepted as the best way to set a treble hook lure. For the most part, I do set the hook /w a sweeping motion when the fish bites a certain way. There are times, however, that a fish will bite a squarebill a certain way (this is something you learn /w experience and I cannot explain it) where you can lay a hook set into them and not be worried. A lot of times this type of bite seems to come when you bringing a bait through cover.

Are there any crankbaits that you've tried that you do NOT suggest?

Hard to say. I've caught fish on Cotton Cordel $1.5 that worked in a manner that I expected from a $1.5 crankbait. I just prefer a higher quality bait that does things and has certain qualities a lesser bait doesn't.

What techniques do you use for your selected crank?

I throw them everywhere, especially in and around wood and rip rap.

Name a good squarebill and in what situations to throw it!

Spro Fat John around shallow rip rap-shad/bluegill spawn-backs of pockets around isolated brush

Zoom WEC E1-Around wood, laydowns(specifically branches)

I like Timber Tigers.  They come in several different sizes, I use them all depending on what depth I want to fish.  Most of the the I use their Texas Shad color.   It is a whitish/silver grey bait with a rose tint on the sides and a greenish dark stripe along the top.

For their DC2 - which is similar to a Mann's Minus 1, I like their translucent brown color - no particular reason except that it works for me.  If the Texas Shad color isn't working or if I want to fool around with color, in clearer water situations I will use different bait fish colored lures.  In murkier waters, I will use a more opaque color.  Sunny days, I will use a more shiny color.  Cloudy days I'll use a more opaque color.  My most successful muddy water color (secchi disc reading of a foot or less) has been a pearly chartreuse with a fairly wide purple stripe down the back.

My preference for Timber Tigers has to do with how they maneuver through brush and timber better than any

other crank I've found.

When the situation calls for square bills, I still throw Timber Tigers.  The most versatile one in the Timber Tiger line is the DC8 - which will still get down to 6 feet or so on the 17 or 20 lb line I generally throw it on. If you want a smaller profile - the DC5 works well.   If you are going to stay shallower than 4 feet and want a wide wobble and thump, go with the DC4.

I won a bunch of square bills - burt the Timber Tiger gets the start 95% of the time.  Same for diving cranks - I have a bunch of different brands but95% of the the it is a DC13 or DC16 that gets thrown first.

My primary exception to this rule is when I feel the need to fish a deeper lake point that I'm pretty sure hasn't any brush on it, then a DD22 thrown on 10 lb line gets the nod.

Timber Tiger, that's a new one. Haven't read anybody talk about those yet on this site so that's perfect. Always fun reading new information!

For all the people posting about squarebills and other crankbaits, you should be teaching and shedding light in here!

Academy H20, $4, Academy, depends a lot on the situation but sexy citrus shad has been good lately.

Under what circumstances will you throw any type of crankbait?

Pretty much anytime the water is stained and above 45 degrees.

How do you determine what color crankbait to use? What factors tie in for you?

Time of year, forage available, water color, weather conditions.

How do you set the hook when you know you've got a fish on?

Side sweeping hookset.

Are there any crankbaits that you've tried that you do NOT suggest?

Rapala Rattlin Raps, never caught a thing on them.

What techniques do you use for your selected crank?

Straight retrieve making sure it's running into things, stop and go, ripping through weeds.

Name a good squarebill and in what situations to throw it!
