What is the best type of jig when it comes to tieing your own jigs and also who makes the best football jigs for tieing

They all tie about the same.  The thing to do is all of the tying before installing any weedguard.  Go to some of the web stores like Barlow's, Jann's Netcraft, Lure Parts on Line, Lurecraft, etc.  See what they offer then check with Siebert Outdoors or Cadman and see what kind of deal you can get on heads of your choice.

Unlike Jigman I tie all of my jigs with the weedgaurds already glued in.  I offer a few different styles of footballs from Mustad hooks up to Owner XXX strong hooks.

That WG gets in my way.  It is the last thing I do.

I've never tied my own before....however, I've got a couple of good jigs currently naked.  I've got skirts and rubber collar kit for spinnerbaits, but I'd like to try wire-tying these two.  I assume that I can do so with a couple pair of pliers and a pair of dikes?  What kind of wire should I be shopping for?

Yes, all you need is a pair of long nose pliers and a pair of cutters. I make three wraps of wire around the skirt, twist the tag ends, cut the tag ends to about 1/8 to 3/16" long then bend the twisted ends down. As far as wire goes you want to use copper or colored copper wire. It is soft and very manageable. You can buy it at a craft store like Michael's, Hobby Lobby or Jo-Ann fabrics. Buy 24 ga or 22 ga. The smaller the ga. the larger the diameter of the wire. If you want I have a step by step tutorial on how to hand tie. Pm me your e-mail and I will send it to you tonight.

I tie mine with kevlar fly tying thread. I have NEVER had a jig I made come apart. They either got so dull or were lost before that ever happened.

I've use several types of thread and wire but the wire is much faster for bass jigs.
