Super User MCS Posted July 28, 2014 Super User Posted July 28, 2014 Wow that's terrible, and I thought the gun laws were restrictive here in MD. I always keep my HD gun loaded and ready to use if need be. The way I look at it is since you're supposed to treat every weapon as if it's loaded, then it might as well be loaded. Yep that is why Beretta is leaving the once great state due to the gun control measures. MD is so liberal now it is a shame, I used to be proud to say I was from there. Fla will be in the same boat soon enough if crist gets elected. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 I have a 12 gauge with 00 close at hand, but what I will reach for first inside the house is my 9mm SR9c. I too may have other handguns stashed...I am far more comfortable with a handgun in any close-in fast moving situation. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 29, 2014 Super User Posted July 29, 2014 Ideally, I'd use my Remington 870: 00, slug, 00, slug, ..... Trouble is in MA it's illegal to have them loaded & unlocked in one's own house, so I'll have to get it from my safe, get the ammo (from another locked container, depending on your interpretation of the law), load it, then deal with problem..... Pretty sure I'd be OK as a technical criminal in that situation. Call me crazy... 1 Quote
tip2oo3 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 M&p9 with light attached,my main two concerns with a shotty= retention and maneuverability. It's handy to have a hand free when fumbling around your house in your briefs after being brought out of a dead sleep. Quote
FrankW Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I can't think of a worse home defense load than a 12ga slug. Especially if you live in an apartment or close to your neighbors. Many states gives us the right to defend our selves but if you penetrate a wall and kill an innocent, you are in serious trouble. In an apartment I wouldn't use double ought buck. Most of us pick a home defense arm based on its killing power and not how it works in the home environment. I am 80 years old and the muzzle flash and recoil of a 12 ga doesn't work for me. If my home was set up so I could flip a switch and turn on all of the lights, then muzzle flash wouldn't be a problem, once I got accustomed to the light. But that is not the case. If I fire a shotgun in the dark then I am blinded for a very long time. So for home defense a tactical flash light is first on my list. Since I can't see the sights in the dark I want a laser aiming devise. I have hand guns close at hand in the bedroom but I am not good with a hand gun. So my choice is a Berretta CX4 Storm in 9mm. I can handle the recoil, the rifle is very handy and can be equipped with the right sighting equipment. It still has the over penetration problem but there is new ammo that may solve that problem. The CX4 Storm may not be for everyone but at my age it works for me much better than a 12 ga shotgun. Frank Quote
Super User RoLo Posted September 20, 2014 Super User Posted September 20, 2014 I have a house full of rifles, shotguns and sidearms, but they're all remnants from my hunting years, and have nothing to do with home protection. Nevertheless, if I ever felt threatened in my homestead, I'd just slide a #4 buckshot shotshell in my 12-ga Remington 1100. A scattergun has an astronomically wider striking area than a handgun, and far greater knockdown power. Roger Quote

BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted September 24, 2014 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted September 24, 2014 I live on the fringe of a "questionable" neighborhood so its a good bet I'm within a second of sending lead down range. Mr Remington, Savage, Ruger, and Sig all live with me and my girls. Give me a choice and it's my SR9c with Hornady Critical Defense. I put 50 rounds in a plate sized target at 15 ft with it every month. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 1, 2014 Global Moderator Posted October 1, 2014 If I had the time to pick I'd be reaching for my 870 with birdshot. Like others said, just the sound of racking one into the chamber is going to send most scrambling. If I had to use it though, a single shot from a shotgun at close range, even with birdshot, is far more devastating than most handguns and it's going to stop in the first thing it hits. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I have no idea on home defense stuff, but I used to use a pump for hunting and while it is theoretically reliable it is possible to short stroke the action, especially in times of stress, causing a jam. I would have a semi auto in preference to a pump for that reason. Quote
STPC Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 .357 S&W J-frame...I've yet to have a revolver fail to go bang; no safety, just point and go boom. Quote
MDBowHunter Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 This is my new favorite 30 rounds of FMJ 300 blackout, Just try and hide behind that wall! I'm sure your neighbors will appreciate that thought process while your shooting in their direction. 12 ga with 00 buckshot is the best home defense weapon out there IMO. Oh and I own 2 ARs 1 Quote
Brnnoser6983 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I carry my S&W 9mm with home defense rounds next to my bed, but if I had time any of my guns I would consider using except my .22. I often joke with my wife that we have enough guns to arm everyone on the house once over. Currently have: 12g Mossberg Maverick Remington model 7400 30.06 Ruger 10/22 Ruger American .243 & a S&W 9mm Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 I used to think I'd be fine with a pistol, but after not doing much shooting with my 1911's the last 10 years, and not really wanting to spend the time on a range and money on ammo to get to the point where I would be good enough with them to have to possibly shoot them in the dark, in a stress filled situation, with loved ones in the house, I have gone the 12ga. shotgun route. I just picked up a nice used 18.5" bbl, Remington 870 tactical at a local shop for less than $300, and have some Magpul furniture, and a flashlight on the way for it. Quote

Djf3864 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Glock 19 with TRL2 and spare magazines loaded with Critical Defense ammo, also have a back-up S&W 442 revolver loaded with hollow point 38 special and a full speed strip loader. I live in MA and have to have all guns locked up, can't just leave a shotty leaning next to the bed. So I got one of those quick open handgun safes in the top drawer of the nightstand. Quote
Silas Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 As a recently retired LEO and having taught combat shooting I have always advocated training with both the guns and the ammo you keep it loaded with. Today, in many areas, chances of Home Invasion attempts are increasing. You have to be ready at a moments notice, so close proximity of a weapon is mandatory. For people without children in the house, a loaded and ready to fire weapon could be placed in each room, with spare loaded magazines next to it. Of course in my profession there was always disgruntled criminals to deal with. Now this is an extreme case but since I have several weapons , I deploy them in easily accessible but usually out of sight places: Para Ordnance P-12 .45 with 2 extra mags loaded within arms reach of my recliner. Colt Commander 400 Corbon in kitchen under chopping block w 2 magazines. Sig Sauer .45 .220 within reach of my hand above my head with 3 magazines. AK-47 loaded with 30 round clip on safety. 2 30 round mags beside it under bed within one arm reach. Since I have trained and qualified with all these I don't feel it excessive. My wife knows where each is and I have trained her on their operation. All weapons are fully loaded at all times with a round in the chamber. There is a small powerful flashlight next to each one. Oh and I forgot one: a Smith and Wesson 642 with 2 speed mags next to the commode. ( Don't like being caught with my pants down!) Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 3, 2015 Super User Posted October 3, 2015 First line of defense before the alarm the guy is lurking around outside. The dog will pick him up first. Judging the tone of the bark it's 1911 time. It's happy hour there's free shots of 45acp being served. Plenty to go around. I pity the fool.(race 1911) Quote
68camaro Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 1911 chambered in .45, 8 round mag plus one in chamber gives me 9 rnds. I am confident this will be enough to dispatch the treat, especially in tight quarters:) Shotgun might be better choice but Only long gun we have is 10/22 and original winchester. As a side note, I collect 1911's and shoot them at least twice a week, but since starting this whole bass fishing thing my guns have been getting ignored and my range time after work have been spent at local ponds.....I need more balance in my life 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 5, 2015 Super User Posted October 5, 2015 I been rethinking this instead of possibly blowing out everyone's ears why not move stealthy with a kantana sword? For in the house. Lob off a arm or head. Quote
