If a crazed lunatic broke into your home who was trying to harm you or your family, which one of your guns would you grab and what ammo would you use? I know the obvious, "the closest one to me" but let's assume you have enough time to grab anything you want.

I'd choose my trusty H&R Pardner Pump with Hollow point slugs.

I keep my 12 right next to my bed and out of the case also. The H&R Pardner Pump is pretty much an 870 clone (with a few minor changes) and will accept all the aftermarket parts for an 870, except for an 870 barrel. It was only about $190 (plus tax) and I haven't had any problems with it so far. Can't get much more powerful and reliable than a 12 GA pump at close range.

12 ga. shotgun loaded with #6 birdshot. That way you don't have to worry about a round leaving the house and getting into your neighbor's home and/or through a wall and hitting one of your family members. Lot's of pluses with the old scattergun.

I've thought about birdshot for those same reasons. The only problem with that for me is that my house is so close quarters I'd probably be less likely to have collateral damage with using a slug. I live in an old brick row home on the east coast.

I definitely agree, I keep two shells loaded in mine at all times. My dad doesn't understand why I would prefer birdshot but if he seen the difference between buckshot and birdshot going through the house I'm sure he'd change his mind.

I don't have "neighbors" and my dogs announce the presents of anyone & anything inside & out well in advance of their arrival.

If one is motivated enough to get by the dogs, the 870 Tactical Express will put an abrupt, all be it really messy, end to it - and at such a minimal range slugs or buck shot, it doesn't really matter.

I will say whichever is closest. I may or may not have guns hidden in every room of the house.

Remington 870.  The sound of the action loading a shell is enough to make the less determined run.  If they don't run, the 870 is one of the most reliable firearms ever made.

One of my 1100's is right in the closet about 5 feet from my side of the bed, smooth bore shorty slug barrel and #6 bird shot, still have the sound of racking a shell in, but can also unload 6 shells in under 5 seconds all on target

I have a Mossberg cruiser beside the bed and a glock on the nightstand

I can shoot faster with my pump than my friend can with his autoloader. I can also shoot faster with his autoloader than he can with my AR15-22.

I'm not a handgun owner yet so at the moment it would be a Russian SKS 45. I'm old school...very old school.

I've always wanted a Russian paratrooper model, but the only SKS I ever bought was a Chinese Type 56. Still makes a handy coyote rifle, though.

Yea, pretty much 12 gauge pump Winchester w/ 4x6 shot 2 3/4" magnum.... Birdshot will do it as well as oo or ooo.... Lol... I used to own a 10 gauge... Yikes! Big shotgun... Yep sold it pretty quick. I then believed in a AR15 with police tactical rounds.. But came back to the shotgun! Can't go wrong there!

I've become convinced through the years that I would want one hand free.  This means the 1911 .45acp for me.  Yes, I'm giving up wounding potential for maneuverability.  It's an acceptable trade-off so far as I'm concerned.

Outside, I still grab a bolt action.

I'm really wanting an M1 Carbine in excellent mechanical shape (don't care what it looks like) to bridge my gap between rifles and handguns.  I'm not a fan of the AR platform.

The M1 Carbine fires a 110 grain bullet at around 2000fps.  With hollow point ammo, this is pretty potent and certainly better than some so-called intermediate rounds like the 5.7x28.

Josh

Nothing overly wrong with a AR15...I have frangable Federal police rounds they will not pass thru a wall... Period. 45 caliber is my choice as well in a hand gun... I use to own a HK 45 carbine.. Loved it... A few weapons are better than some, Any weapon is better than a Knife. IMO...

I love AR's, but they don't seem like they'd be too handy in the confines of a house. A shotgun is only gonna be marginally better because at close range the pattern will still be pretty darn tight. On the other hand, shotguns are a little better designed for the quick point and shoot reaction type shots. I'll always have the Remy 870 ready, but I also have a pistol ready with a light/laser combo on it. I figure that way I have all my bases covered.

Hi Folks,

A bit of background:

When I was 20 I was in college on a law enforcement major.

I got to be good friends with the local gunshop owner.  He happened have a Class III license and an early AR.  It could have been an XM; I don't recall.  It had a piece for working the action under the handle and no brass deflector.

I'm a lefty.  I shot that thing on rock'n'roll, and it was fun until a piece of brass flew back and hit my cheek right below the shooting glasses.  It exited with velocity and I had a black eye for a bit.

I flinch whenever I get on an AR.  I have ever since.  Every other rifle I just sort of relax all over, but the AR, nope!  I know the brass deflectors will keep another shiner form happening, but knowledge doesn't help in this instance.

Regards,

Josh

Ideally, I'd use my Remington 870: 00, slug, 00, slug, .....  Trouble is in MA it's illegal to have them loaded & unlocked in one's own house, so I'll have to get it from my safe, get the ammo (from another locked container, depending on your interpretation of the law), load it, then deal with problem.....

Wow that's terrible, and I thought the gun laws were restrictive here in MD. I always keep my HD gun loaded and ready to use if need be. The way I look at it is since you're supposed to treat every weapon as if it's loaded, then it might as well be loaded.

It's like that here also or at least I think it is either way I don't listen to it. Mine are all in individual cases with the ammo in the same case with the exception of the shot guns and my sons 22 they are either in the corner or on the rack.
