bassnbornboy Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Does it matter what color the treble hook on a popper is in very clear water? Quote
BrotherOfTheRepublic Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 I like red treble hooks because to a bass it might make it seem as if its meal is wounded and more vulnerable. Not sure if the bass are actually thinking that but it makes sense to me lol. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 16, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 16, 2014 Probably not but if you have more confidence in a red hook (like I do) then switch them, you'll fish the bait better if you have more confidence in it. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 16, 2014 Super User Posted July 16, 2014 If you believe X color hook is going to help you catch more fish I´m the first one to say you should use it. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 16, 2014 Super User Posted July 16, 2014 Sharp hooks are important before anything else. The trend for red hooks has already faded, few lure mfr's still offer them with bleeding hooks today. Feathered rear treble hooks on surface poppers like Pop-R type lures do help to trigger more strikes. Tom Quote
Super User CWB Posted July 16, 2014 Super User Posted July 16, 2014 I'm with Tom on this. I don't think red hooks are made from the same high carbon steel that most premium hooks today are. Or they cannot be hardened the same prior to anodizing. Scrape or file a little section of a red hook and you will see a bronze color, like the hooks that come on less expensive baits. This is not to say that red hooks are no good and if you have confidence in them, by all means use them. In my experience, they have not made a noticeable difference but I do notice a difference in how they hold up vs Gamakatsu or Owner premium hooks that are black nickel. My opinion only. Quote

einscodek Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I personally dont think it does but if you do then paint the hook red Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 17, 2014 Super User Posted July 17, 2014 I am not a big fan of red hooks. As stated above, it's what you have confidence in. IMHO, it doesn't matter as long as they are sharp. Quote
