NMUbassin Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Ok, I'm looking for a bit of input.. I don't have a whole bunch of rods, so sometimes I run into the dilemma of having to choose what to throw on certain rods. This weekend im fishing a lake where I hear that you SHOULD be throwing BIG worms and jigs. I currently own a Powell 714 (7'1 Heavy) and a Quantum Smoke (7' MH). My question is, which rod would you throw the worm on, and which rod would you throw the jig on? Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 15, 2014 Super User Posted July 15, 2014 I throw my worms and jigs on the same rod. I would probably use the Powell around moderate cover and the Smoke in open water. 1 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I throw big worms on the Powell 714 all the time. Works great! 1 Quote
EmersonFish Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 If you're not going to have a lot of rods, you've got a couple of pretty good ones to work with. I'd think that Powell would be a fine big worm rod. I'd put that jig (assuming it's not a super heavy flippin' jig) on that Smoke, and be set to switch back and forth. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 15, 2014 Super User Posted July 15, 2014 It won't make any difference, you will be fine. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 15, 2014 Super User Posted July 15, 2014 I use the same rods for throwing big worms that I use for little worms. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 15, 2014 Super User Posted July 15, 2014 I've only fished 10" worms, and usually weightless. I am using a MHF and throwing into pads. No idea how heavy a BIG worm is, but as long as it weighs enough to load the tip of that Powell, then either rod should do for either lure. Personally I would prefer the worm on the MH, and a jig on the Heavy. Jig fishing isn't something I do much of. (Yeah. I need to change that. ) I do have a 1/2 oz. jig with a 3-1/2 inch Mr. Twister Grub Tail set up on a 6'10" HF. Rod really launches that lure. Lure pretty much stays on that rod all the time. How do you like that Smoke? I heard some really good things about those rods, and want to try one myself...preferably a Medium. I don't like paying full price, and TW's 9% off isn't what I call a bargain. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 16, 2014 Super User Posted July 16, 2014 I guess it would have more to do with weight of each bait than which bait. Over 1/2 oz, I'd go to the heavy. Anything under 3/4 oz., medium heavy. 1 Quote

Anything under 3/4 oz., medium heavy. Some examples 10" Anaconda = .5116oz 10" Thumper = .54205oz MSRP is $160 on the Smoke, TW has it cheeper than most already at $129. If you caught the TW 4th of July discount it was $101 thats when I snatched another 7' M/F Smoke. The Smokes seem to be stronger than their classification- Smoke MH actually "rates" stronger than the 714 H- Smoke up to 1-1/2oz lure 25 pound line, 714 1oz and 20 pound line. The other ? is what do you prefer for jigs fast or extra fast cause isnt the 714 XF and Smoke is F? I like Fast rods over XF myself for actual casting so Id put XF for pitching flipping and Smoke for longer casting duties. Quote
