5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 To save a long story, I'll give the short version. Last couple years I was overweight (almost obese). At 6 feet tall I was up to 271. Not all fat, but mostly. My goal was 199. Got to 213. Fell behind and went back to 271. Literally. Now I'm about 263. I am striving for 199. Question is I need to make the exercise (diet is better) more interesting. I would love to do exercises that relate to fishing so that it seems more like I'm working to be a better angler as well as a better me. I have an elastic training band and a nice subdivision. That's it. Gym membership is out because it is too far and expensive. I don't want to invest in training hear but I want to use what I have already. Are there any training programs geared towards fishing? I was thinking some an workouts with the band to help with hook sets, forearm workouts for long days of holding the rod, brisk walking to lose the weight, etc. Thanks! Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 In January, 2013, after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, which included hormone therapy, my weight had ballooned to 254#. I made up my mind to get the weight off. Started a diet, and began walking two miles a day. By July, 2013, my weight was down to 184. Been a year now and I am still holding at 185. Just make up your mind to do it and stick to it. You can make it work, I promise. Best of luck to you. Hootie 3 Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 By the way, my walking wasn't every day. Just 4 to 5 days a week. Hootie Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Just go to a pond, make five or six cast and walk a little ways and do that the whole time you fish. I move about every 10-15 casts and I'm 6'2 120 and it even gives me a workout. I'm not sure how much that helps, but I think it would help a lot with keeping it interesting and making you a better angler at the same time. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 you won't lose weight or get in shape by fishing, it just isn't enough of a cardio or a strength training workout to change your physiology. Â I would go get a pull up bar that goes over the door and if it's in your budget, some selectable dumbbells. Â With those two items, a chair, some ab work and push ups you can do pretty much anything you want to get back into shape. Â Add in some walking/jogging and that will help too. Â The most important thing, even more so than working out is nutrition. Â I keep mine pretty simple, lots of lean protein and as many fruits and vegetables and water as i want. Â I limit carbs for the most part but with my cycling ramping up i am adding more carbs into my diet. Â The best workout in the world means nothing if you are fueling your body with junk. 3 Quote

I didn't mean solely fishing for the workout. Wish it was that easy lol I meant workouts that directly helped foshing like core exercises and the like. I will incorporate some brisk walking each day in the am too. I don't like running. Lol Quote

Th1317 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Take kayak fishing. Paddling 6-10 miles is great for upper body and can have cardiovascular benefits. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 Also, if you have the funds available, get yourself a P90x or insanity workout set of DVDs. Â They are designed to be done at home and the results are incredible if you actually do the workout plan and follow the nutrition plan. 1 Quote

Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 Flyfisher is dead on about nutrition, I was 2 lbs from obesity before I woke up. I didn't eat much until I got home from work and had a big meal. Kept my body in a catatonic state all the time. Now I eat 5 times a day, protein, fruits, vegetables and select fats. I run and do body weight exercises In Tabata protocol and have lost 27 lbs. I'm about 9 lbs from my goal weight and feel absolutely great. Today I turned 48 and have not been at this weight in 15 years. Google body weight exercises and you'll find a ton of 411 on it and it doesn't break the bank! 2 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 If I could figure out how to email the files I have P90x one and two, insanity, insanity:asylum and T25 all on my laptop the full series the diets everything. A-Jay Please, just call me Jack!...LMAO!I had to laugh at that, back when I was a fine young strapling I got my first construction job. I was on a crew who were much older than I and at the time I was power lifting. I lifted during the winter and was getting pretty big. When spring rolled around it was time to shed some layers. A few of the guys used to tease me calling me Jack Lalanne...LOL...I had no ideas what they were talking about, the inter web was just getting underway, what the heck was googling back then!? Thanks for the birthday wish Bud! 1 Quote

Getting and staying fit is not as complicated as we try to make it. It really is pretty simple-just not easy. With better eating habits, walking, strength training and core work I've gone from 335 to 200# over the last couple of years. I can do everything better now  , including fishing! 3 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted July 14, 2014 Super User Posted July 14, 2014 Ohhhhhh!!! We get to share fat stories!?! I was 265 Jacked out of my gourd! Back when I was 21. Im talking body builder jacked! I went through the juice like it was candy. Probably greatly damaged my liver, but who cares it regenerates. Anyway to make a long story short. I ripped the upper head off my bicep in a freak workplace accident. Then when I was getting back in shape I blew out both my hamstrings. I am now 309 with a gut. However my arms and legs still look amazing. Smaller, but amazing known the less. As for the OP. I'm gonna let you in on a secret about weight lifting. Are ya ready for this? Cause I'm being straight up serious. Serious as a heart attack. Unless your one of those special people. Kinda like my egotistical self. Weight lifting SUCKS! Not everyone thinks its the greatest thing in the world. Its not supposed to be fun. Its not supposed to be easy. You have to be committed to it. If your mind ain't in it your gonna hurt yourself, probably pretty bad. You gotta focus on every move your body is making during the lift. Try having your hands wrapped to a bar(because otherwise your gonna drop it) that has 400 lbs on it to do shrugs. If your not focusing on your neck and shoulders your gonna mess yourself up. I don't care if you are curling 5lb dumbbells. You focus on the muscle and your movements. If you ain't committed then go run and diet. There is no magic pill to make you lose weight. There is a magic pill that can make weight lifting fun though. You still have to be focused and committed for it to work however. Your muscles should be tired when you are done. If not your doing it wrong. Lifting ain't easy. Its not suppose to be. I leave you with this golden nugget of wisdom. I may catch flak from everyone else here about it, but I don't care. Its my motto and how I choose to exercise, and frankly it works just fine for me. "If you ain't puking you aint training hard enough!" That's the reason when I bulk up and get in shape I look like an absolute beast. I live for weight training. It is my all and my every thing. My family and one other thing are the only things more important to me than this. I live for the feel of the weights. The feel of that bar against your hands. The sounds of weights clanging and slamming. The screams the roars from yourself and other lifters! The heat and the sweat. The absolute release that comes when you pound out a set and your body is begging you to stop. Yet you go pound out two more reps just to push past that mental block. God I love lifting! Quote
Gaerith Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 There is no work out that is going to relate to fishing, that's just wishful thinking. If you want to lose weight, diet is the major factor. Count your calories/ portions with something like the myfitnesspal app. Eat 500 or so less than your daily req. If you are still gaining or stalling cut back 200 more, etc. Exercise helps too. Maybe pick a goal and work for it, such as wanting to be able to walk a 5k or having bigger pecs. Look for a workout program that works towards that goal, for example couch to 5k program. Be aware that there are two types of exercising - cardio and strength training. Pick 1 to start with and work on it to start out (neither requires a gym. If you're interested in strength training without going to the gym look into getting the you are your own gym app, or check out fitloop.co. I don't like the gym either man, I have a kid attached to me at all times when I'm not working and the fitloop workout is a godsend. Stay away from the fad workouts as well. Stuff like p90x is OK, but first of all its cardio and nothing else. Second of all, there is no progression that you can work towards. Once you master it thats it, whereas a good workout program will always have a next step you can reach for. Good luck man, getting healthy is worth it. The longer you live, the longer you can fish. 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 14, 2014 Super User Posted July 14, 2014 All the hi tech workout gear and modern DVD's are great, but no better than the advice of the real GURU and that was Jack LaLanne.  I've had free weights, bowflex, steppers, treadmills and Nordic Track, of all them I thought the Nordic was the best, but rendered a chronic back problem for the last 20 some odd years. Losing weight is about burning more calories than you ingest, getting fit is about exercise.  It takes both approaches, you can lose a ton of weight and still be out of shape. It's really that simple, eat right, exercise and stay active, that said results vary and as easy as it sounds it takes hard dedicated work.  Resistance bands are super good, pushups, jumping jacks, road work, all it takes is dedication, not a huge a investment. I'm 69 and in pretty good shape, primarily due to being active the last 50 years, I never allowed myself to gain weight, but I am wearing down. I'm nothing compared to my sister, at 65 she still runs mini marathons and triathlons, goes several hundred mile kayaking trips, thinks nothing of hoping on her bike and peddling a hundred miles.  Never worked out a day in her life and she is no athlete, just has a lot of drive. 3 Quote
