Theangler1 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 My okuma trio spinning rod has a problem with the bail. It can click to stay open and stays open but to stay closed it does not click anymore after a problem occurred which doesn't lock it anymore. Do you guys know what's wrong with it or should I just take it to the pros at BPS? Thanks guys. Quote
TNBassin' Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Do you reel the bail closed, or close it by hand? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 It's impossible to say without seeing it. Bails can be tricky I wouldn't open it up unless your confidence is high. If it's not too old return / exchange it. If you'd like to send it in, include your screen name to get a members discount. Quote
Theangler1 Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 I always close it by hand. Ok I will have to reevaluate it and see if I can try to fix it again. Thank you for the replies Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 There's no mechanical reason for closing the bail by hand, that's a line management technique (a good one to follow). Make sure you have a schematic and pay real close attention if you disassemble the bail. Look for a broken spring or anything obvious. Quote
TNBassin' Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I was always told that reeling a bail closed is a good way to mess up or break the spring, along with avoiding tangles. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 14, 2014 Super User Posted July 14, 2014 When you close the bail, you are decompressing the spring, irrespective of how you close it. Quote
TNBassin' Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I personally don't like that resistance that is felt by reeling the bail closed. Close it by hand and that resistance isn't felt as you don't have to move the handle to the point the bail engages. To each their own. I'll continue to do it my way as it gives me piece of mind and I respect my gear. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 14, 2014 Super User Posted July 14, 2014 I close my hand and seat the line on the roller as well, but in any modern spinning reel, what you're doing by hand exerts the same wear and tear as closing the bail by tuning the handle. They aren't like they were years ago. Quote
